POSITION SUMMARY

The Research Associate contributes to LOSH research on worker safety and health and employment issues in California, with a particular focus on low-wage, immigrant, and/or non-English-speaking workers and those in high-risk industries. They assist with implementing discrete research activities in support of LOSH research initiatives and in close coordination with the LOSH Research Analyst and labor and community-based partners. Responsibilities include assisting with project planning and coordination; convening meetings with project contributors; creating research tools in English and Spanish; collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data; summarizing and presenting results for various audiences; and contributing to written reports, publications, and grant proposals. The Research Associate represents LOSH in in community meetings and professional conferences, and participates in LOSH organizational and staff development initiatives.


Department Summary

The UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program is dedicated to promoting worker health, safety, and wellbeing, and building capacity for workers and worker organizations to take action to improve working conditions. LOSH offers high-quality training and education, participatory action research, policy analysis, and worker leadership development to advance worker rights and protections. LOSH is a unit of both the Institute for Research and Labor and Employment (IRLE) and the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH).

Assist with Project Implementation

Create tools for the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data; Participate in project activities, including team meetings, outreach, data collection, and data dissemination; Coordinate with prospective study participants to facilitate enrollment; Administer surveys, conduct interviews, facilitate focus group sessions, conduct worksite visits, gather data from public sources, and other data collection as appropriate; Support with IRB applications, disseminating and tracking research incentives, and maintaining required documentation; Develop and maintain positive relationships with research partners; Translate materials from English to Spanish

Analyze and Communicate Research Findings

Analyze data and summarize results for various audiences, including workers and community members, policy makers, and academics; Communicate research findings in a language and format that is accessible to worker and community audiences; Contribute to written research reports and peer-reviewed journal articles; Stay up-to-date on current research in the field of occupational safety and health, with a particular focus on California; Participate in community meetings, workshops, and other events as appropriate to support programmatic goals. Present research findings at local and national conferences and in community-based forums.

Support LOSH Operational Activities

Participate in LOSH staff and project meetings, strategic planning activities and staff retreats; Support grant proposal writing and reporting activities; Provide support and guidance to Graduate Student Researchers participating on LOSH research projects; Other duties as assigned by supervisor
