POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Medical Director, the Primary Care Assistant Medical Director supports the mission of the organization by supervising the physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who provide day-to-day delivery of health care and medical services in Primary Care Units including but not limited to Continuity, Triage, Immunization and RN Services at the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center (AASHWC). The Primary Care Assistant Medical Director is a member of the Medical Quality and Improvement Committee, Clinical Oversight Committee, Infection Control Committee, Quality Improvement Committee, and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. The Primary Care Assistant Medical Director is responsible for other activities related to health care such as peer review, patient satisfaction, physician-APP collaborative practice (including furnishing), clinician professionalism and conduct, recruiting, credentialing and assessment processes. The Primary Care Assistant Medical Director takes an active role in ensuring access and quality, overseeing utilization, and participating in operational and resource management and compliance. The Primary Care Assistant Medical Director also engages in direct patient care.

Our comprehensive services include Primary Care, Gynecology Services, Immunizations, Travel Medicine, Physical Therapy, Specialty Clinics, Radiology & Laboratory, and Acupuncture – all under one roof! We are also pleased to offer additional services in the Ackerman Student Union: a full-service optometry center, U See LA Optometry, and the Bruin Health Pharmacy.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

CLINICAL CARE

Provides direct primary care, including in-person, telehealth, and asynchronous care. Provides care and coordination of care for students with acute, episodic, and/or chronic or complex health care needs, including but not limited to, neither all-inclusive of, illnesses, injuries, eating disorders, gender affirming care, gynecologic care, pre-operative evaluation, mental health care, and dermatologic conditions. Performs minor outpatient procedures as necessary. Oversees the clinical practice of and provides consultation to clinic support, nurses, and advanced practice providers (APPs). Serves as a supervising and collaborating physician for APPs.

MEDICAL SERVICES MANAGEMENT

Provide oversight of primary care clinicians and nursing. Review and make recommendations on credentialing, privileging and appointment process of clinical staff. Recruit, provide in-service training and orientation for new clinical staff. Coach and mentor clinicians on issues relating to medical decision making, utilization management, and billing/coding. Create and enforce professional standards among members of the clinical staff. Manage and monitor service standards and performance measures for clinical staff. Ensure cross coverage of services to provide uninterrupted delivery of care during staff absences and furloughs. Participate in ongoing process improvement efforts. Create and review medical policies and procedures, including standardized procedures and standing orders.

ADMINISTRATION AND QUALITY DEVELOPMENT

Ensure compliance with county, state, federal and accrediting body standards. Participate in ongoing quality improvement efforts including peer review, MD-NP Case Conference, and medical case review. Oversee the weekly huddles (brief unit meetings). Take an active role in ongoing process improvement efforts. Create and approve medical policies and procedures, including standardized procedures, standing orders and clinical guidelines. Review and make recommendations on credentialing, privileging and appointment process. Provide oversight and leadership to medical education programs. Consult as required on health-related issues to UCLA and UCwide systems office. May be assigned to provide oversight and supervision for Ashe's Infection Control Program.
