POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacy Manager of the Bruin Health Pharmacy at the Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center and their designee (e.g. staff pharmacist), the Pharmacy Technician II shall perform the functions of pharmacy technician and shall be responsible for assisting the pharmacists in the core functions and duties and perform other pharmacy functions as listed below.

 

A Pharmacy Technician 2 is not authorized to perform any act requiring the exercise of professional judgment by a pharmacist.

Our comprehensive services include Primary Care, Gynecology Services, Immunizations, Travel Medicine, Physical Therapy, Specialty Clinics, Radiology & Laboratory, and Acupuncture – all under one roof! We are also pleased to offer additional services in the Ackerman Student Union: a full-service optometry center, U See LA Optometry, and the Bruin Health Pharmacy.

Pharmacy Technician Duties

Prescription review: Quantity calculations, prescription direction, verifications and any other inquiries regarding new prescriptions or refills when deemed necessary/appropriate. Call for pharmacist assistance when needed. Accurately look up prescription records. Accurate prescription order entry complying with departmental policy and procedures. Proper insurance adjudication; calculate accurate prices of medications upon customer request. Process prescription requests. Call physician or patients as required, notify pharmacist of potential problem. Filling: Accurately set up and fill medications for pharmacists to check according to department standards. Assist pharmacists with prescription clarifications with clinicians and insurance company (i.e. ambiguous prescriptions, PA approvals).

Patient Care Support

Provide customer support in both check-in and check-out procedures and call pharmacist for patient counseling per department policy. Assist in responding to pharmacy related patient inquiries via email or telephone. Assist with prescription/OTC inventory management per department policy under the supervision of pharmacist. Assist Pharmacist with placing medication order and checking in non-controlled substance medication delivery. Replenishing stock and keeping accurate par levels of all drugs. Maintaining all drugs in alpha order. Manage active pharmacy inventory by adding and removing drugs as needed. Report erroneous prescription data to Pharmacy Manager. Work on special projects that may arise throughout the center as needed.

Pharmacy Support

Monitor functioning of pharmacy equipment (i.e. refrigerator temperature setting, Kirby-Lester machine). Monitor pharmacy supplies and replenish/reorder throughout each working day as necessary (vials, office supplies, cleaning supplies). Refill KL60 prescription labels. Assist Pharmacy Manager in shipping pharmacy prescriptions/documents/invoices to Iron Mountain for storage under the direct supervision of the pharmacy manager. Assist Pharmacy Manager in conducting random non-controlled medication audit. Create and update pharmacy forms/templates for staff use as needed. Participate and lead daily morning huddles and meetings.

Inter-Departmental Support

Assist Accounting Department with verification of sale(s), reversal of charges, proof of reversal documents for patients and other pharmacy related billing inquiries. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, peers, clinicians and administrators and a harmonious work environment through positive interactions and collaboration and assist with resolving inquiries and issues within all Ashe departments.Screen/redirect interdepartmental calls to proper pharmacy or clinic staff. Remove outdated medications from pharmacy inventory. Return-to-stock prescriptions (Reverse insurance charges, Prepare drugs for restocking per department standards). Maintain a clean and organized work area. Keep Pharmacy Manager informed with pharmacy activities as needed

Administrative Duties

Maintain on going awareness of Pharmacy services, procedures, and policies, and accurately communicates specific instructions regarding the use of Ashe services, based on individual needs and situation. Uphold customer service standards: Appropriately introduce self and title on the phone and uses sensitivity and professionalism with interactions; Communicate accurately and understandably both orally and in writing, including e-mail; Is sensitive to cultural influences, physical comfort zones, and language barriers when communicating with patients and staff.
