POSITION SUMMARY

The Specialist, K-12 and Community Audiences develops, implements, and evaluates dynamic formal and informal learning initiatives that engage K-12 schools and multigenerational community audiences with the Hammer Museum's collections, exhibitions, and resources. Under the supervision of the Associate Director, Academic Programs, this position manages programs and tours for K-12 students and teachers, including two intensive school partnership programs, and programs and gallery resources for multigenerational community audiences. This position also works to strategically identify and build K-12 and multigenerational community audiences and collaborates with the communications department on outreach to those audiences. The specialist will also contribute to wider Academic Programs department initiatives, including high impact university and adult programs. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 or more years of experience working with K-12 audiences, excellent gallery teaching and art-making facilitation skills, and demonstrated ability in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing educational programs.

K-12 Student & Teacher Programs

1. In partnership with the Associate Director, Academic Programs develop relationships with schools and teachers, conduct outreach, and give formal and informal presentations to foster the use of the Museum's collections, exhibitions, programs, and resources in teaching and learning.

2. Strategically identify and build K-12 audiences and implement engagement strategies to foster meaningful connections between the lives and interests of K-12 students and teachers, particularly in LAUSD, and the Museum.

3. Manage the Hammer Classroom partnership program, a multi-visit 4th-12th grade program that connects teachers and students to art by contemporary LA-based artists through teacher professional development, classroom curriculum, and field trips to the Museum. Manage the Classroom-in-Residence at the Hammer program, a partnership with UCLA and LAUSD Tile I Schools that consists of an immersive 5-day residency at the Museum for two classes, pre- and post-residency school visits and its affiliated teacher training program.

4. Manage the Mann UCLA Community School partnership program, a multi-visit high school program that connects art on view in the galleries to social justice themes and students' lives. Manage the Classroom-in-Residence at the Hammer program, a partnership with UCLA and LAUSD Tile I Schools that consists of an immersive 5-day residency at the Museum for two classes, pre- and post-residency school visits and its affiliated teacher training program. 

5. In partnership with the Associate Director, Academic Programs and collaboration with Specialist, University Audiences, conceptualize and coordinate K-12 tours of the Hammer permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, and Murphy Sculpture Garden.

6. In collaboration with the Specialist, University Audiences and Assistant Educator, train and mentor university student educators on content standards and best practices for K-12 students, provide teaching support and lead tours as needed for school groups. Research, utilize, and teach object-based learning pedagogies and museum education best practices.

7. Monitor and assess tours on an ongoing basis.

Community Programs

1. Oversee, facilitate, and evaluate mission-based programs that encourage multigenerational audiences, including children and families, to make meaningful connections to art, one another, and the world.

2. In collaboration with the Assistant Educator, Strategically identify and build multigenerational community audiences and implement engagement strategies to foster meaningful connections between the lives and interests of the diverse Los Angeles community and the Museum.

3. Serve as the project manager for art-making workshops for multigenerational audiences, including but not limited to Art Lab. 

4. Collaborate with teaching staff, artists, and other contractors to ensure that initiatives achieve programmatic goals and are implemented in accordance with Museum policy.

5.Conduct all planning and coordination of community programs for multigenerational audiences, including preparing contracts, developing and producing collateral, creating event timelines, overseeing student educators, and organizing materials and correspondence.

6. Develop gallery interpretive guides and activities (print and online) targeted to families, including content research, production, coordination and distribution.

7. Working with the Associate Director, Academic Programs, and the Assistant Educator, manage partnerships and collaboration with

community organizations that focus on youth and multigenerational audiences.

8. Monitor and assess community initiatives on an ongoing basis.

Program Management & Support

1. Develop program and project plans for each initiative that include timeline, schedule, budget, audience goals, and performance metrics. Regularly communicate with internal and external partners on a timely basis.

2. Manage part-time Graduate Student Assistant during the academic year.

3. Support the Specialist, University Audiences in the development and mentorship of 14 Student Educators. Provide support to the hiring, coaching, evaluation, and professional development process.

4. In collaboration with Associate Director, Academic Programs and Museum leadership, assess risk profile for each program and take appropriate steps to mitigate risk, manage expectations, and ensure high quality program production.

5. Draft and route applicable contracts for review by Associate Director, Academic Programs. Monitor overall progress of program contracts. Process applicable payments and enforcement of terms.

6. In partnership with the communications department, work to develop text, images, and other marketing materials for programs. Ensure Hammer website is always up to date with all information related to family and K-12 offerings and programs.

7. Compile, track and maintain statistics and other performance metrics.

8. Develop and produce evaluation reports regularly to inform program planning and evolution as well as to facilitate communication with internal stakeholders and external partners.

9. Compile, organize and archive all records for each program, including all necessary supporting documents.

10. Facilitate all financial transactions related to programs and projects in accordance with Museum policies.

11.Contribute to other departmental initiatives as needed, including Student Educator Program and other university and adult programs.
