GENERAL SUPERVISION - Indicates that the incumbent develops procedures for performance of variety of duties; or performs complex duties within established policy guidelines.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position provides an opportunity to play a key part in a research laboratory at the interface of synthetic biology, developmental biology, genome engineering and quantitative imaging. Working in state-of-the-art lab at UCLA the incumbent will contribute to ongoing efforts to develop molecular tools for monitoring cell signaling histories, transcriptions factor expressions, and cell fate decisions in single cells. Training in established techniques will be provided as needed, but the work will require attention to detail, reliability, and significant independence of day-to-day operations.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Lab Asst III will assist with laboratory procedures such as mammalian in situ hybridization, confocal and wide-field fluorescence microscopy of focused samples and live cells, and maintenance of cell lines, cloning, and preparation of DNA and RNA, maintenance of laboratory equipment, supplies and records. the incumbent will work closely with lab members and collaborators in completing experiments and keeping up-to-date records.

Laboratory Support

A1. Assist in the DNA and RNA preparations and cloning of DNA constructs, including reporter, barcode, guide RNA, and expression vectors. (E)

A2. Assist in generating, maintaining, freezing, thawing, and transient transfection of mammalian and stem cell lines under established protocol (E)

A3. Assist with cell stimulation, time course, and molecular recording experiments, including preparation of media, reagents, and samples according to established procedures (E)

A4. Perform fluorescence in situ hybridization and related sample preparation on fixed samples (E)

A5. Confocal and wide-field fluorescence microscopy of fixed sampleasand live cells, including organization and maintenance of imaging records (E)

A6. provide lab support and organizational needs, address routine technical problems, summarize, and present results and prepare figures, graphs, and tables involving experimental data (E)

B1. Supervise purchasing, receiving, inventory, storage, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and reagents (E)

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree

in Biology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred

1 to 2 years

of experience in a research laboratory (can include substantial undergraduate research or thesis work)

Required

Technical knowledge of molecular biology (e.g. molecular clonng, PCR, nudeic acid purification and cell biology techniques (e.g. mammalian cell culture, sterile technique, transfection, microscopy)

Preferred

Direct research experience involving molecular biology, synthetic biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, genome engineering, or cell signaling

Preferred

Experience with fluorescence microscopy, including live cells and fixed cells imaging, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and/or flow cytometry.

Ability to record and report results with clarity, including maintenance of laboratory notebooks and preparition of basic figures, graphs and tables.
