GENERAL SUPERVISION - Indicates that the incumbent develops procedures for performance of variety of duties; or performs complex duties within established policy guidelines.


POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision, the successful candidate will perform technical

laboratory work related to their project. This will include but not be

limited to the facilitation of experiments led by senior lab personnel.

The successful candidate may also receive training to carry out

specialized laboratory tasks. Tasks may also include administrative

duties such as maintenance of experimental or analysis notes, a lab

notebook, data entry of results, ordering of supplies, office work, and

inventory. The successful candidate may also be expected to perform

tasks that require ideation and testing of ideas under continuing input

and supervision from Professor Rodriguez.

The successful candidate is expected to gain or possess the skills,

knowledge, and abilities necessary to complete successful

performance of the duties assigned and a strong background in

physical biochemistry and structural biology. The skills, knowledge,

and abilities required to perform these tasks will be gained through a

combination of extensive study and hands-on experience.

There is no clinical work associated with this position


Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

a) Ordering laboratory supplies as needed and/or requested

b) Researching pricing, comparison shopping, contacting vendors for quotations, negotiating discounts

c) Researching competing products from alternate vendors

d) Maintaining a detailed database of all purchase orders

e) Acquiring and cataloging of Certificates of Analysis for high purity reagents and Material Safety Data Sheets for all reagent

Note keeping, writing and figure generation

a) Laboratory record keeping including: chemical inventory, freezer inventory, equipment manuals, warranties, software, etc.

b) Cataloging and archiving of laboratory notebooks and research materials

c) Maintaining filing system for all hard-copy documents

d) Generating and maintaining databases for all digital documents

e) Generation and manipulation of charts, tables, figures, and micrographs

f) Copy editing

g) Image processing

h) Generation of project-specific reports

Laboratory Safety

C. Laboratory Safety

 

C1. Comply with UCLA EH&S safety policies. Creating/revising SOP forms for general and/or organic lab courses.

 

C2. Perform safety and facility inspection of all general and/or organic chemistry instructional laboratories to ensure safe and efficient usage of facilities by students.

 

C3. Respond immediately to all laboratory accidents, and provide assistance to students.

 

C4. Report all accidents in instructional laboratories to Chemical Safety Officer.

 

C5. Creating chemical waste manifests and proper disposal of chemical wastes in compliance with UCLA EH&S regulation.

Knowledge of the safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals and safe laboratory practices. Knowledge of current state, federal, OSHA regulations as they apply to the assigned tasks. Knowledge of UCLA regulations is strongly preferred.
