POSITION SUMMARY | The AI Specialist for AI in Teaching and Learning will advance the UCLA Teaching & Learning Center's (TLC) mission to elevate and celebrate inclusive excellence in teaching by engaging our community of educators in equity-minded and research-based teaching practices, instructional innovation, and pedagogical research. The AI Specialist for Teaching and Learning (hereafter AI Specialist) supports the adoption of AI tools and the development and implementation of AI-enabled instructional practices across UCLA. The AI Specialist reports to Senior Advisor to the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning for Digital Accessibility. This role focuses on faculty support, training, and applied integration of AI tools into teaching and learning environments, with particular attention to accessibility, inclusion, and a range of discipline-specific needs. The AI Specialist will collaborate with campus partners, particularly Academic Technology groups in Digital and Technology Solutions (DTS) and the UCLA Library, to pilot and evaluate AI tools, research and develop service models aligned with instructor needs, and support implementation of AI initiatives in conformance with strategic priorities established by the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning. Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Training & Capacity Building | • Engage with DTS in AI tool research, pilot, evaluation and plans for scaling/implementation. • Design and deliver training workshops, webinars, and resources on AI best practices for instructors, teaching assistants, and staff. • Enhance instructor-facing resources on AI (e.g., AI literacy, course assignments, AI assessments, content repositories). Develop documentation, teaching guides, resource repositories, and self-paced resources and multimedia related to AI in teaching and learning. • Promote inclusive design principles and pedagogical strategies for integrating AI into the curriculum, and support equitable access to AI tools used in instruction. • Collaborate with faculty and disciplinary teaching support units to troubleshoot and address instructional challenges with AI implementation. • Provide specialized support for AI integration with STEM course content, including: ▪ Mathematical notation (e.g., MathML, LaTeX) ▪ Scientific diagrams, charts, and data visualization ▪ Coding environments, software tools, and simulations ▪ Laboratory materials and technical documentation | 40% | Instructional Support & Consultation | • Consult with instructors, instructional designers, and academic staff to support the integration of AI into course design, assignments, and assessments. • Project management and instructor support through TLC-funded grant programs. • Provide targeted guidance to instructors for mitigating risks associated with AI use, including academic integrity, bias, and accessibility concerns. • Work with relevant TLC staff and campus partners to review and assess digital course content for accessibility compliance and usability, and support instructors in taking action to engage in continuous improvement of their course content and related artifacts • Support the adoption and integration of AI-enabled instructional technologies and digital resources. | 35% | Technology Development and Support | Test and recommend AI tools for a variety of instructional needs, disciplines, and modalities. | 25% | | | | | |
