POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director and Deputy Director, the Educational Resource Development Manager is responsible for overseeing the assessment, development, and organization of educational materials and resources of the Asian American Studies Center. This work includes, but not limited to, transforming collections into instructional resources, distributing resources and research-based publications, and managing archival projects by preparing materials for digitization and overseeing metadata and Content Management System (CMS) ingestion. The incumbent will also oversee the dissemination of policy reports and journal articles produced by the Center. The incumbent will serve as the primary administrator for various digital asset management systems, digital and special collections projects, such as the Asian American Pacific Islander Multimedia Textbook Project, Yuri Kochiyama Collection, Japanese American Research Project, Never Forget: Filipinx Americans and the Philippines Anti-Martial Law Movement, Reading Sa I Gu Collection and future projects.


Department Summary

Established in 1969, the UCLA Asian American Studies Center (AASC) is a national research center dedicated to advancing historical, transformative and interdisciplinary scholarship that bridges research with community voices. The Institute for American Cultures houses the AASC along with the American Indian Studies Center, Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, and Chicano Studies Research Center. The centers are the only ethnic studies organized research units (ORU) among the 10 University of California campuses. The AASC advances research and the field of ethnic studies through publications, public programs and events, providing funding opportunities, maintaining the largest Asian American Studies library and archives in the U.S., housing 7 Endowed Chaired Professorships, and community partnerships with local, state and national organizations. The Center has 13 staff and a Faculty Advisory Committee made of 55 Faculty members cross campus.

Educational Resources and Materials Development

A. Assess, develop, and organize educational, multimedia, and instructional materials and resources for various research projects.

B. Create resource materials from the Asian American Studies Center’s research projects, publications, library archives, and special collections.

C. Disseminate accessible resource materials, policy reports, and journal articles to academic institutions, campus partners, community partners, government agencies, other stakeholders, and the larger public.

D. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure content meets instructional and operational goals.

E. Translate emerging digital learning practices into instructional media, graphics, and materials that reflect current trends.

F. Analyze to ensure primary resources are aligned with educational and instructional standard and guidelines.

Archival and Production Management

A. Serve as project lead on analog-to-digital production and maintenance of special collections and archival projects.

B. Advise, plan, oversee and supervise  the metadata creation and preparation of materials for digitization and ingest to CMS, particularly requiring advanced knowledge of facets, metadata, subject specialty, and features adaptable to changing needs of the AASC archival projects.

C. Create and maintain a digital asset management system for archival preservation of digital collections and library projects.

D. Develop and maintain  metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, library and information science industry standards, and quality control processes to ensure metadata accuracy.

Supervisory Responsibilities

A. Supervise and train staff and student workers who assist with the research projects, care and use of the materials, and special collections.

B. Evaluate performance of staff and program areas or, where appropriate, coordinate performance evaluation processes.

C. In conjunction with the Senior MSO, coordinate resolution of personnel issues including hiring of key staff, compensation, classification and related issues with Campus Human Resources Office.

D. Serve on search committees and assist with onboarding and off boarding of employees.

Technology Strategic Planning

A. Maintain expert level knowledge of standard computer operating systems, software products, and alternative solutions and approaches.

B. May serve as expert design lead for new and continuing projects of moderate scope.

C. Train users of educational and instructional resources.

D. Act as liaison with central IT administration on new projects and negotiate new projects with stakeholders.

E. Advise, plan, and collaborate with the web development in enhancing the overall web, mobile and social presence of the Center through new initiatives as well as enhancement and maintenance of existing systems.
