POSITION SUMMARY

UCLA Humanities Technology (HumTech) provides information and technology services to the UCLA College, Humanities Division. As part of the Digital Services Group, the Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing enterprise infrastructure systems that meet the unique and varied requirements of our academic community. This role manages heterogeneous environments spanning Linux and Windows servers, cloud platforms, and on-premises systems that directly impact the day-to-day computing environment for faculty, staff, and students. The ideal candidate excels at automation, disaster planning, security monitoring, and identity management across hybrid enterprise infrastructure. The position is hybrid remote with a minimum of two days a week on campus.


Department Summary

Humanities Technology (HumTech) is the dedicated technology partner for faculty, staff, and students in the Humanities division at UCLA. We offer a wide range of services, from email support to 3D modeling, and from quick advice to comprehensive programming and development. Our primary goal is to provide robust foundations that enhance humanities instruction and research. We collaborate on digital projects and deliver technical expertise and solutions tailored to the unique needs of the humanities community.


Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Support capacity planning and long-term strategic goals for compute and storage systems across departments. (E)

Analyze and troubleshoot complex system problems using diagnostic tools and outside consulting. (E)

Assist in resolving system problems for faculty and staff. Modify or implement systems as required. (E)

Respond to monitoring alerts and events per departmental and University procedures. (E)

Recommend and perform system improvements, upgrades, patches, and reconfigurations. (E)

Maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans. (E)

Manage enterprise VPN, DNS, and DHCP services across hybrid environments. (E)

Develop and test disaster recovery and backup procedures for virtual and physical environments. (E)

Maintain firewall rules and network access controls. (E)

Cloud & VM Infrastructure

Configure and maintain hybrid computing platforms including virtualized compute and storage, on-premises and in cloud. (E)

Perform regular system backups. Verify integrity by restoring and verifying data. (E)

Monitor and automate cloud hosting operations. Track usage and spend. (E)

Deploy and maintain enterprise servers across Linux and Windows using automation tools (e.g., Ansible, PowerShell, or similar). (E)

Design virtual networking including VPCs, route tables, and security groups across cloud providers. (E)

Manage cloud and on-premises services including web platforms, CDN, WAF, and load balancers. Administer enterprise platforms including proprietary and closed systems. (E)

Provision and manage SSL certificates and domain names across hybrid environments. (E)

IT Security & Identity Management

Ensure compute and storage architectures are secure and in university compliance. (E)

Lead security planning and deployments with campus and HumTech staff. (E)

Monitor and respond to security incidents using vulnerability management and endpoint security tools (e.g., Qualys, Trellix, or similar). Implement remediation strategies and ensure compliance with security standards. (E)

Oversee system monitoring using platforms such as Cacti, Nagios, or equivalent. Review alerts and implement remediation strategies. (E)

Administer enterprise directory and identity services including Active Directory, Group Policy (GPO), and user provisioning. Manage access controls and integrations across hybrid environments. (E)

Configure SSO and MFA integrations (e.g., Shibboleth, DUO, or similar). (E)

Project Management, Training & User Documentation

Serve as project lead for system upgrade, migration, and deployment projects. (E)

Develop system architecture documentation following department standards. (E)

Document computing, storage, backup, and web application installation and maintenance procedures. (E)

Train users in job-specific systems access. (E)

Lead legacy system migration and decommission efforts to modernize division infrastructure. (E)

Manage vendor relationships, software licensing, and hardware procurement. (E)

Production-level experience in enterprise server management, configuration, and troubleshooting across Linux and Windows environments, including web server platforms (e.g., NGINX, Apache, or similar) and working knowledge of relational database platforms (e.g., MSSQL or similar).

Strong understanding of network protocols, VPN technologies, DNS management (e.g., Infoblox or similar), firewall configuration, and SSL certificate management.

Production-level experience with major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP, or similar) including VPC configuration, security groups, cloud-native services, and container technologies.

Proficiency with infrastructure as code and configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform, PowerShell DSC, or similar). Strong scripting abilities across Linux and Windows environments using languages such as Bash, Python, PowerShell, or equivalent.

Experience administering Windows Server environments and enterprise systems, including directory services, Group Policy, endpoint management, print services, and Windows-based virtualization. Familiarity with federated identity protocols (e.g., SAML or similar) for SSO integration troubleshooting.

Experience with backup strategies, disaster recovery planning, and business continuity for both virtual and physical environments.
