POSITION SUMMARY | The Executive Director provides executive-level operational leadership for the Semiconductor Hub within the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. The Hub advances semiconductor research, education, workforce development, and technology translation through coordinated industry partnerships and faculty-led research initiatives. Reporting to the Dean of Engineering and working closely with the Faculty Director and Executive Committee, the Executive Director is responsible for implementing the strategic direction established by Hub leadership; managing industry alliance and membership programs; overseeing administration of sponsored research activities; directing day-to-day operations; supervising staff; and leading revenue development initiatives to ensure long-term program sustainability. | | | |
Department Summary | The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science includes more than 6,500 undergraduate and graduate students and 215 full-time faculty members. Established in 1945, UCLA Samueli is known as the birthplace of the internet, and where countless other fields took some of their first steps — from artificial intelligence to reverse osmosis, from mobile communications to human prosthetics. The school academic departments include Bioengineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, as well as the recently added Department of Computational Medicine, which is affiliated with both the David Geffen School of Medicine and Samueli. In addition, UCLA Samueli offers the Master of Science in Engineering Online program and a Master of Engineering professional degree program. |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Industry Partnerships & Alliance Management | • Manage, cultivate, and expand industry memberships, sponsorships, and research collaboration agreements. • Serve as the primary operational point of contact for corporate partners and sponsors. • Identify and develop new partnership opportunities to grow membership and sponsored research participation. • Coordinate negotiation and structuring of industry engagement models in collaboration with faculty leadership and appropriate campus offices. • Maintain and expand a professional network within the semiconductor ecosystem to support program development. | 50% | Strategic Implementation and Operational Leadership | • Implement short- and long-term strategic objectives established by the Executive Committee and faculty leadership. • Lead day-to-day operations of the Semiconductor Hub, translating approved priorities into executable plans, workflows, and operational processes. • Implement governance structures and operating models approved by Hub leadership. • Develop and monitor performance metrics to assess program effectiveness and operational efficiency. • Lead execution of approved growth and revenue development initiatives to support program sustainability. | 20% | Sponsored Research Program Oversight | • Oversee administration of industry-sponsored research programs conducted within the Hub. • Manage proposal calls, review coordination, budget tracking, and progress reporting processes in partnership with faculty leadership. • Ensure compliance with university, sponsor, and regulatory requirements. • Facilitate communication between faculty investigators and industry sponsors to ensure successful project execution. | 15% | Staff & Resource Management | • Directly supervise two full-time staff members, with responsibility for hiring, performance evaluation, professional development, and workload prioritization. • Oversee programmatic budget administration and financial monitoring in coordination with the Dean’s Office and campus financial units. • Establish operational systems and workflows to support efficient and compliant program delivery. | 10% | Liaison & Stakeholder Engagement | • Serve as liaison among faculty leadership, the Dean’s Office, central campus units, and external partners. • Prepare reports, presentations, and briefings for internal and external stakeholders. • Represent the Hub at meetings, conferences, and industry engagement events as appropriate. | 5% | | | | | |
