POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Associate Athletic Director, Football Sports Medicine and the Head Football Strength & Conditioning Coach, the Football Performance Assistant Director, Sport Science will assume leadership and responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and management of the performance sport science program provided to the football student-athletes. This position leads football research initiatives to identify critical qualities and metrics related to enhancing athlete performance, health and safety, and talent identification. The role oversees the delivery and implementation of sport science services across all integrated support team (IST) disciplines and is capable of influencing athlete performance planning, resources, and organizational processes through data collection, coordination, and analysis. In addition, the Assistant Director, Sport Science possesses a broad understanding of IST specialties (i.e., strength and conditioning, sports medicine, mental performance, etc.), in order to effectively provide leadership and support in a collaborative high-performance sport environment. The role also Provide integrated nutrition support to optimize health, body composition, recovery, and performance of football student-athletes in collaboration with the Director of Football Nutrition and the Integrated Support Team (IST). The role requires frequent interaction with athletes, sport coaches and strength staff. In addition to the ability to develop and provide educational resources as needed. Incumbent will work with the Football Strength & Conditioning Staff, and Football Athletic Training Staff to integrate their work into the UCLA Football program.

 • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and oversight for the Football Performance Sport Science program to enhance student-athlete performance, health, availability, and long-term development. Serve as the primary integrator of sport science services across the Integrated Support Team (IST), ensuring alignment with football performance objectives and institutional priorities.

    ◦ Lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Football Performance Sport Science program in collaboration with Strength & Conditioning, Sports Medicine, Nutrition, Mental Performance, and Coaching Staff.

    ◦ Oversee the full sport science data lifecycle, including data collection, quality control, storage, analysis, modeling, visualization, interpretation, and communication to key stakeholders.

    ◦ Establish benchmarks and normative datasets to support talent identification, player development, and longitudinal athlete tracking.

    ◦ Deliver actionable insight into player evaluation and development.

    ◦ Provide strategy and oversight to sport science services and research, validation, and integration of testing protocols across performance disciplines.

    ◦ Develop testing battery protocols in collaboration with other IST performance disciplines.

    ◦ Supervise the development of performance and sport science resources. 

    ◦ Identify and budget priority needs for equipment and training.

    ◦ Identify, define, and manage key performance indicators (KPIs) in collaboration with athletic performance coaches and IST staff.

    ◦ Develop benchmarks (e.g., normative data) of attributes needed for athletic success.

    ◦ Regularly complete performance audits to determine progress, gaps, needs, and areas for improvement against KPIs.

    ◦ Develop and improve data collection protocols for current and new assessments.

    ◦ Ensure that the appropriate safety protocols and techniques are followed during testing and monitoring sessions.

    ◦ Manage and administer safe, legal, and ethical practices for the dissemination of athlete, team, and related institutional performance data.

    ◦ Organize and deliver educational workshops, seminars, webinars, etc.

 • Support the Director of Football Nutrition in the planning, implementation, and delivery of evidence-based nutrition strategies aligned with the Football Performance Model.

 • Assist with day-to-day fueling, hydration, and recovery needs of football student-athletes across training, practice, competition, and travel environments.

 • Integrate nutrition-related data (body composition, fueling compliance, hydration status, wellness metrics) into the broader sport science monitoring and reporting framework.

 • Assist in the development and evaluation of individualized nutrition strategies based on positional demands, training phase, injury status, and performance goals.

Nutrition/Dietician

 • Support ongoing research, evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives related to applied sports nutrition within the football performance program.

 • Assist with nutrition logistics related to team travel, training table operations, fueling stations, and special performance initiatives.

Administrative Responsibilities

 • Critically review literature on sports science especially as it pertains to college health and assess its applicability to athlete health care.

 • Educate, mentor, and supervise interns and volunteers.

 • Develop and oversee sport science policies and procedures.

 • Evaluate research proposals presented to the Athletic Department.

 • Liaison with Strength & Conditioning Coach for all budget needs related to Football Performance Sport Science.

 • Coordinate and administer special and extra team events.

 • Assist, on an as needed basis, with all official and unofficial visits as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations.

 • Perform administrative duties as needed.

 • Assist the Head Coach, Recruiting Staff, and Operations Staff with any projects necessary.

Administrative Responsibilities

Support department initiatives identified by senior administration, to include creating budget strategies and fundraising/development initiatives.

Collaborate with sport coaches and team staff to support, develop, and inform talent identification processes.

Advise and develop organizational best practices to further advance and integrate sport science protocols into team processes, training programming, and periodization strategies. Maintain relationships with sport science technology vendors.

Oversee and maintain inventory, supplies, equipment, and allocated training spaces (e.g., performance and sport science laboratory).

Recruiting Duties & Tasks

 • Work with the coaching and recruiting staff in the off-season to assist with on campus recruiting visits. This will include both unofficial and official visits to the UCLA Football program.

 • Responsible for assisting in creation of the Football Performance sport science presentations that will be given to all prospective student athletes on campus visits.

 • Responsible for collaborating with each Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach in creating recruiting plans and strategy for each prospective student athlete.

 • The DIA is governed by the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and University of California System.  The incumbent is required to comply with the applicable rules, regulations and policies of those organizations.
