SUPERVISION - Indicates that the incumbent performs a variety of routine duties within established policies and procedures or by referral to the supervisor’s guidelines.


POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, perform a wide range of duties designed to preserve the health and beauty of plants on campus.  Irrigate, fertilize, mow, edge, trim, and cultivate lawns and shrubs, utilizing various power and hand tools, drive 1/2 and 1-1/2 ton trucks and utility tractors.  Identify plant pests and diseases.  Prioritize and schedule work assignments, instruct and explain work procedures to co-workers and report material and equipment needs to supervisor.  Perform special enhancement to grounds areas in preparation for special events.  Coordinate with section mechanics to ensure preventative maintenance and repairs of assigned equipment.  Administer on-the-job training, and ensure their understanding of the work crew's duties, responsibilities, safe equipment operations practices and Facilities Management Policies and Procedures.  Monitor subordinate staff performance by inspecting their work area and make disciplinary and incentive recommendations to department supervisory staff.

 • Provide workers or work crews with job instructions, including materials and equipment to be used, and establish a time schedule in which the job should be completed.

 • Monitor the job performance of subordinates and provide input to the supervisor.

 • Train subordinates in proper work methods and practices to ensure they can satisfactorily perform their job functions.

 • Perform a full range of groundskeeping duties to complete daily maintenance and part or all of a given project.

 • Operate and maintain a variety of power and/or hand tools, vehicles, and equipment related to the job function.

 • Lead groundskeeping personnel in all aspects of grounds maintenance, including irrigating, fertilizing, mowing, edging, trimming, and cultivating lawns, trees, shrubs, and plants.

 • Ensure all areas adjacent to landscaped areas are kept clean. Ensure the availability of trash and green waste bins.

 • Visit job sites to discuss job status with subordinates and determine progress, accuracy, and quality of workmanship. Assess progress in relation to established time schedules and resolve problems on site. Report ongoing problems to the supervisor.

 • Upon completion of work, clean up the job site and return and secure equipment, materials, tools, radios, and Kronos wands in designated storage areas.

 • Maintain accurate records of hours worked on each job and special event.

 • Maintain inventory to ensure materials and equipment are available to subordinates on a daily basis.

 • Order materials and supplies based on information provided on estimates or work requests, with the    supervisor's approval.

 • Maintain records of materials ordered, verify materials received, and forward packing slips/requisitions to Purchasing.

 • Prioritize and track work assignments.

 • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls by assigning appropriate personnel. Respond to off-hour emergencies, overtime projects, and special events as required.

 • Transport materials, equipment, and personnel to and from job sites expeditiously.

 • Follow established safety procedures at all times, including regularly inspecting vehicles, tools, and equipment for signs of damage, malfunction, or deterioration.

 • Report all problems to the supervisor.

 • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as requested by the supervisor.
