POSITION SUMMARY

As a member of Development's senior management team, the AVC is responsible for aligning External Affairs donor relations, campaign operations, gift policy, development events and prospect development functions to effectively support UCLA's fundraising/stewardship performance goals while achieving a sustainable and cost-effective operation.  In consultation with the Assistant Vice Chancellors for Development and other EA leaders and partners as appropriate, the AVC will assure transparency, efficiency and responsibility. Through direct reports, the AVC oversees the offices of: Donor Relations; Prospect Management and Development Analytics; Budget, Prospect Research; Campaign Operations; Gift Policy; and Development Events.

Senior Leadership and Strategic Planning

1. Serve as advisor and partner to Associate Vice Chancellor, Development on a wide range of issues. 

 

2. As a member of the senior leadership team, participate in setting vision and objectives, and aligning support services priorities and delivery with Development strategy. 

 

3. Ensure that the senior leadership team has an effective framework, research and data needed to engage in planning discussions. 

 

4. Coordinate with and align initiatives among Development, Advancement Services, and Alumni Affairs, to maximize fund raising success through shared information, understanding of tools, resources, and excellent customer service.

 

5. Manage specialized resources whose skills may be dedicated to one, or multiple internal clients to maximize impact and efficiency.

6. Lead the evaluation of new technologies, such as AI, and their impact and alignment with Development’s mission. Guide the leadership team in setting vision, communication, and adoption strategies of new technologies.  Provide leadership and guidance to Development managers in collaboration with campus technology units on implementations.

 

7. Serve as development liaison for the Office of Public Records, legal affairs and the office of ethics and compliance to manage sensitive projects, including public records requests, international donor vetting/reporting, decisions on return of funds.

 

8. Serve as the development representative on university wide committees on sensitive issues, such as cannabis research and funding.

Donor Relations

1. Provide leadership to the central Stewardship and Development Events teams, and to the stewardship units in schools/units.

 

2. Oversee programs to enhance donor experience and encourage the donor continuum through strong, consistent and systematic communication and appreciation.

 

3. Direct campus-wide initiatives integrating various schools and External Affairs partners.

 

4. Monitor program effectiveness through diverse methodologies including outreach to donors.

 

5. Integrate all Stewardship and Events officers across campus to provide and assure guidance on best practices.

 

6. Partner with the Principal Gifts Strategy office on management of high-profile events and matters.

7. Manage select high profile donor relationships, serving as a key point of contact for complex inquiries and issues, as well as curated reporting.

 

8. Liaise with the campus architect on physical donor naming opportunities and issues.

 

9. Provide leadership, expertise and guidance on new technology implementation, including AI initiatives across Development.

 

10. Provide leadership and guidance on development and growth of online donor giving portal.

 

11. Oversight of high-profile endowed reporting to donors and representatives.

Prospect Development

1. Provide leadership to the prospect development program that increases fundraising results/ capacity.

 

2. Oversee integrated prospect development program through management of all activities leading to relationship-building: research, prospect identification and management, and portfolio and performance management and analysis.

 

3. Advise on program change and innovation with goals of optimizing prospect pools and moving prospects through cultivation to produce the greatest return on investment. 

 

4. Oversee integrated teams that provide strategy and analysis support in prospect portfolio/pipeline development for all campus-wide, campaign, and school/unit fundraising efforts.

 

5. Provide leadership in creating strategic services, processes, and training for prospect development.

Campaign Operations

1. Provide strategic and operational direction to support campus campaign fundraising priorities.

 

2. Fulfill strategic goals and development efforts to ensure campaign priorities are met.

 

3. Implement a comprehensive plan to support short-term and long-term campaign fundraising goals.

 

4. Evaluate progress toward goals and manage day-to-day campaign activities.  

 

5. Manage campaign projects, drive programmatic innovations and improve processes that provide advice and strategy for campaign issues.

Gift Policy

1. Provide leadership to the Gift Policy team in the review and acceptance of gifts ensuring the best interests of donors and UCLA are met.

 

2. Oversee the administration of services that guide development officers on gift policy and tax regulations, including review of all proposed major gifts, planned gifts, endowments, endowed chairs, and namings.

 

3. Oversee advisory services to Development and UCLA leadership during gift negotiation.

 

4. Provide leadership and guidance to the team on acceptance of gifts that require additional vetting, including, but not limited to the cannabis industry, international, emerging technology, affiliations, etc.

 

5. Provide guidance to the team and units/schools on acceptance/denial on gifts that may not comply with the values of UCLA.

6. Serve as a liaison for sensitive matters regarding use or return of funds.  Work directly with legal affairs, office of research, unit/school leadership.

Budget

1. Oversee the administration of the Development budget of approximately $40 million.   

 

2. Implement effective mechanisms for reviewing unit budgets in order to identify opportunities to more effectively deploy financial resources.

 

3. Direct the development of the annual budget process, including coordination of the request process; the review, analysis, and recommendations for approval process. 

 

4. Regularly advise senior leadership on budget status and budget implications of proposed activities.
