POSITION SUMMARY

The Williams Institute, a national research center on sexual orientation law and public policy at UCLA School of Law, seeks an experienced and energetic development professional with a passion for advancing the mission of the Institute and meeting and exceeding development goals. The Williams Institute current budget is over $6 million. The Director of Development will be responsible for leading the Williams Institute's corporate and individual giving programs, including events, gift solicitation, public and private grants, donor cultivation, program endorsement, development operations, and support staff management.  In addition, the Director of Development will supervise and work closely with the Institute's Assistant Director of Grant and Finance Administration, overseeing grant management and budgeting for the Institute. The candidate must possess a high level of judgment in developing ambitious programs that will result in the expansion of the Institute's income base, budget, and impact.  This position supervises a team of four full-time staff, including the Fundraising Manager and the Assistant Director of Grant and Finance Administration, who directly supervises two staff members.

Plan and execute, with the help of the Fundraising Manager and Events and Community Engagement Specialist, all Williams Institute development events, including current events in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and New York City. Prospect Identification, Cultivation, Solicitation and Stewardship

1. In close collaboration with the Executive Director, Research Director, and other Williams Institute staff, develop and implement a comprehensive plan for identifying, soliciting, and stewarding major gift prospects and donors. (E)  2. Independently, and in collaboration with Law School faculty and Donor Engagement colleagues, use available data to develop constituencies and identify and qualify new prospects in relation to academic priorities. (E)  3. Develop and implement collaborative strategies and timetables for successful solicitation of individuals, corporations, foundations, and other funding entities. (E)  4. Envision and develop resources to inform prospective and current donors of new and relevant Williams Institute research and programs (E). 5. Independently develop and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, making a designated number of face-to-face visits per year for the purposes of discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Maintain active awareness of individuals in the prospect pool at various stages of identification, cultivation, and solicitation. (E)  6. Arrange meaningful opportunities for the Executive Director, and other Williams Institute leadership to meet with potential donors and volunteers in forums designed to increase support of priorities and interest in the Williams Institute. (E)  7. Devise and execute long- and short-term strategies and timetables for successful major gift solicitations of individuals and other funding agencies with an emphasis on the Institute's endowment goals. (E)   8. Organize and conduct meetings of volunteers and donors designed to identify quality prospects for private support. Establish and maintain effective, high-level volunteer structure designed to provide counsel with regard to development matters and to assist with specific solicitations and other programmatic elements, as necessary. Extend the courtesies of the university to donors and volunteers as appropriate. (E)  9. Develop and personally manage long-range, comprehensive cultivation strategies and timetables that deeply engage prospects and inspire them to become donors. Take advantage of broader cultivation opportunities where possible and create unique cultivation activities when necessary. (E)  10. Maintain appropriate records on all donors and prospects under management including managing follow-up reports and contract with donors on use of their gifts. (E)  11. Provide staff support to volunteers in solicitation of prospects. Arrange for appropriate academic leaders to participate in solicitations. Participate directly in meetings when appropriate. (E)  12. Develop giving opportunities and appropriate case statements. Create and direct the preparation of written proposals and/or other specific materials for use in specific solicitations. (E)  13. Coordinate strategies for continuous stewardship and friendship building to ensure regular contact with donors through personal visits, letters and other written materials, phone calls and events. (E)  14. Provide vehicles for donors' continued awareness of the Institute's needs and objectives in order to encourage continued giving. (E)  15.
