POSITION SUMMARY

The UCLA Labor Center is seeking an Associate Director of Foundation Relations (ADFR) to work with the Labor Center Director of Development, Center Director and staff to support the growing fundraising program, including the upcoming Comprehensive Campaign for the UCLA James Lawson Jr. Worker Justice Center and related signature programs. The ADFR must have initiative, self-confidence, mission alignment, and experience working with highly productive and collaborative teams.

 

Under the direction of the Labor Center's Director of Development, and in consultation with the Center Director, the Associate Director of Foundation Relations is responsible for supporting the grant proposal development from conception to stewardship stages which includes utilizing a wide array of prospect research tools to research and analyze data as part of overall identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship efforts for foundation and contract prospects. Supporting cultivation and solicitation efforts, the ADFR will develop concept papers, letters of intent, grant proposals and development communication to identify and cultivate prospective funders for private support, identify a core group of prospective six-figure and seven-figure grant opportunities, and prepare for and participate in solicitations.

 

The Labor Center's fundraising team includes the Director who oversees the fundraising program, the Associate Director of Development who focuses on individual major gifts, the capital campaign, and development events, and the contracts and grants program which this position will directly support. In partnerships with the Director of Development and Labor Center program directors and researchers, the ADFR will cultivate working relationships both internally and externally. Externally this role will create and build relationships with Foundation representatives and other Institutional Funders. Incumbent will have the opportunity to hone their fundraising skills and understanding of grants fundraising in a dynamic environment with a mission driven focus. Incumbent will manage a portfolio of funders, and proactively aim to increase giving from various funders.

Maintain contact with institutional prospects at all stages of discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship; advance existing and new relationships. Support Director with ongoing proposals and reports. Assess prospect’s giving potential, philanthropic programs, possible mutual contacts and develop strategy for potential cultivation. Manage post award stewardship, including acknowledgements and reporting. Serve as the primary point of contact for staff and PIs: writing grants and solicitations; reviewing grants written by staff or consultants; integrating data; supporting budget development process; managing awards and facilitating compliance internally; preparing reports; supporting stewardship. Coordinate and implement campus/JLWJC visits and other related funder events.

Grants Management

Interpret contractual agreements, analyze problems related to booking grants, resolve questions involving grants. Draft and proofread general correspondence, effectively communicate to donors and staff, ensuring diplomacy and discretion. Evaluate, review and modify proposals and budgets to ensure proper grammar, data accuracy, completeness and compliance with foundation guidelines and college policies. Facilitate meetings with PIs to engage in planning and strategizing proposals, understand funding needs, determine focus for grant efforts and develop prospect lists unique to needs and opportunities. Create briefing updates to share with the LC leadership before site visits, or other important engagements. Provide guidance and leadership to streamline the grant process.

Research and Administration

Maintain regular communication withCenter Fund Managers, OCGA, EFM and Director to help ensure accurate, timely posting of funding opportunities and proposals. Talk with institutional funders and foundation representatives to gather strategic information pertaining to research and philanthropic interests beyond what is readily available on the web or in print resources. Conduct research to identify aligned foundation requests for proposals and new funding areas. Support Director of Development to train and coach PIs and program staff on the grant-writing process and procedures. Track and follow top prospects to understand updates or changes to their funding priorities and respond to new advertised opportunities.

Fundraising Team Collaboration

Co-lead in Development Team meetings and projects; attend and engage with the broader UCLA External Affairs trainings, meetings, and opportunities; occasionally attend the College and Division of Social Science development-related meetings. Participate in Center all-staff meetings, retreats, professional development opportunities, and community builders; and occasionally the Steering Committee meetings on fundraising/budget. Collaborate on prospects that overlap with major gifts and institutional donors to ensure a cohesive solicitation strategy for that prospect. Support Lawson Fundraising Campaigns. Support all development signature events and all hands on deck Labor Center events/programs. Other duties as assigned.
