POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Fire Alarm & Security Systems Supervisor and direction of the Lead Electrician or journey-level technician, the Facilities Mechanic performs routine, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance tasks associated with fire alarm, life-safety, and electronic security systems.

The Facilities Mechanic assists with and independently performs assigned inspection, preventive maintenance, installation, testing, troubleshooting, repair, replacement, and documentation of fire alarm and security system equipment including access control, video surveillance, intrusion alarm, panic/duress alarm, and related low-voltage systems. The position requires strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work with electronic, electrical, mechanical, and low-voltage systems. The employee must be able to troubleshoot problems systematically, identify defective equipment or wiring, make repairs within the scope of the classification, and communicate conditions requiring assistance from journey-level technicians, supervisors, vendors, or other UCLA trades.

Work may be performed independently or as part of a crew and may require coordination with electricians, other Facilities Management trades, UCLA departments, contractors, vendors, and other University stakeholders.

Maintenance and Repair

 • Under general direction of Supervisor, Lead, or journeyperson, perform routine, semi-skilled, and unskilled electrical maintenance or tasks.

 • Perform preventive maintenance, inspection, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of fire alarm system devices and associated equipment.

 • Assist journey-level electricians and fire alarm technicians with testing, modification, and repair of fire alarm and life-safety systems.

 • Perform routine troubleshooting and maintenance of electronic security systems including surveillance cameras, intrusion detection systems, panic alarm systems, access control systems, card readers, door contacts, request-to-exit devices, electric locking hardware, clocks and related equipment.

 • Respond to trouble calls involving repair or replacement

Installations and Modifications

 • Install, remove, replace, terminate, test, and adjust low-voltage devices, equipment, cabling, connectors, power supplies, and related components as assigned.

 • Assist with installation, aiming, adjustment, testing, replacement, and basic troubleshooting of IP and electronic video surveillance cameras, intrusion alarm systems, access control systems.

 • At request of Supervisor, Lead, and/or Journey Electrician respond to trouble calls involving repair or replacement.

Installations and Modifications

 • Work from blueprints, drawings, and/or oral instructions.

 • Report discrepancies in existing blueprints to Supervisor in order to keep existing as-built as current as possible.

 • Install conduits, switches, receptacles, contactors, controls, relays, microprocessor based systems specifically Grinnell/Auto Call, Siemens/Pyrotronics, and/or Notifier, CCTV card access, digital surveillance, intrusion alarm, access control,  and other computer based systems.

Administrative Tasks

 • Operate and maintain a variety of power or hand tools including digital multimeters and other electronic test equipment to diagnose electrical and electronic system problems.

 • Transport materials and personnel to and from job site.

 • Assist with the set-up and cleaning up of job site.

 • Return equipment and materials to appropriate locations.

 • Follow UCLA Facilities Management safety procedures, applicable codes, manufacturer requirements, shop procedures, and University policies

 • Maintain accurate hours worked on each job.

Administrative Tasks

 • Respond to off-hour emergencies and overtime as required.

 • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as requested by Supervisor.

 • With smaller projects and minor repairs evaluate problem, extent of repair and determine appropriate material and equipment required to complete project.

 • Submit completed work orders to Supervisor for closing out project.

 • Request tools and equipment, materials, parts etc. and submit to Supervisor.

 • Orally discuss jobs with Supervisor to keep apprised of job progress.

 • Provide direction to Facilities Workers or unskilled workers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Driver License

Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles.

Ability to: perform routine electrical maintenance tasks, including electrical repair on de-energized electrical circuits; read project specifications, blue prints, and technical trade related manuals.
