POSITION SUMMARY | Under the general supervision of the Director and the direct supervision of the Associate Director, the Program Manager has primary responsibility for the strategic development, implementation, and management of outreach, communications and marketing for the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities in the UCLA Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC). Responsibilities of this position include: manage public events on and off campus in coordination with multiple collaborators and participants; under the direction of the Associate Director, develop, strategize and implement communications and publicity for program activities, including writing and editing copy and creating or coordinating graphic presentations for website, social media, videos/photography, listserves, and other marketing outlets; create and implement marketing strategies for distribution of program items, including catalogs and posters; promote and coordinate academic opportunities for visiting graduate students (VGRs), and small grants programs; coordinate with collaborators in Japan to organize joint international programs and produce bilingual English and Japanese marketing materials; provide support and information to long and short-term visitors regarding travel, housing, and campus resources and policies; and other duties as needed. Hybrid/remote work possible. Occasional in-person evening and weekend hours required. | | | |
Department Summary | The Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities in the UCLA Department of Asian Languages & Cultures was established in 2014 to realize a sustainable, equitable, globally interconnected future for the Japanese humanities. Its activities include the advancement of scholarship on Japanese literature and the arts; support for literary translation; public programs on performance, film, design, music, art, food, and architecture; and the creation of digital educational content. |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Event Management | Manage and coordinate public events, including academic lecture series, conferences and workshops, and cultural programs in Japanese humanities at UCLA, in the community, and in national or international venues, including Japan. Coordinate with participants, collaborators and partners; oversee event logistics and staffing in coordination with Program Assistant, including scheduling, venue reservations, travel logistics, program details, technical needs, and catering. Work with other UCLA offices and third-party vendors for equipment rentals, food purchases, and marketing materials. | 40% | Marketing and Publicity of Programs | Manage publicity for events, programs, and academic opportunities of the Yanai Initiative. Write and design announcements, web articles, social media posts, posters, newsletters, and photography/videos. Coordinate with graphic designers and printers. Coordinate with communications and marketing teams in other units, including UCLA Communications, partner communications offices, translators, and editors. Develop and implement strategies to increase contacts, attendance, and reach via mailing lists, listserves, and social media. In collaboration with stakeholders and designers, compile, edit, and oversee production of the annual report. | 40% | Visiting Scholar and Student Support | Create and disseminate calls for applications and invitation letters in English and Japanese for short and long-term visiting scholars and graduate students identified and approved by the Director.
