POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design & Media Production in UCLA's Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), the Senior Associate Director of Media Production (hereafter "Senior Associate Director") provides strategic leadership and organizational support for the Teaching and Learning Center's instructional and promotional media initiatives. The Senior Associate Director develops and implements scalable media production services with a team of staff and multiple  studios to create accessible digital learning assets that advance innovation and elevate teaching at UCLA.

 

The Senior Associate Director leads operational and programmatic decision-making for the media production portfolio, empowering the media production team to expand instructor and staff participation in the creation of high-quality instructional and promotional media. Responsibilities include developing and managing production workflows; directing project implementation; overseeing studio infrastructure and service delivery; managing production schedules and tracking systems; and reviewing work products to ensure quality, accessibility, and alignment with academic standards, TLC and institutional priorities. The incumbent demonstrates strong communication skills, initiative, and the ability to analyze challenges and implement effective, creative solutions.

 

In close collaboration with the instructional design team, strategic communications team, and other TLC units, the Senior Associate Director manages the creative aspects of media development. Media products, which include video, graphics, animation, immersive experiences, and related assets, support various instructional modalities and communication channels, translating complex concepts into engaging content across disciplines. The role partners with campus and UC systemwide stakeholders to advance key teaching and communication initiatives, administers media-related programming for the UCLA community, and promotes innovative, digitally accessible media that enhance learning outcomes and audience engagement.

 

The Senior Associate Director represents the TLC in campus-wide media production efforts and on UCLA and UC systemwide committees, contributes to campus communications promoting media production programming and services offered by the TLC, and serves as a principal point of contact for faculty, academic units, and collaborators for educational and promotional media design inquiries. The incumbent brings advanced production expertise, strong aesthetic judgment, and deep knowledge of media technologies and learning design strategies to deliver high-impact digital experiences in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

 

 


Department Summary

The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) supports UCLA's community of educators in engaging in inclusive and research-based teaching practices in support of diverse learners, advancing instructional innovation and pedagogical research, and celebrating teaching excellence. To realize this mission, the TLC collaborates with instructors, leadership, and various campus partners to champion visionary ideas and forward-thinking initiatives that transform and elevate the teaching enterprise.

Strategy & Leadership

 • Lead media production planning and delivery for instructional, promotional, and strategic initiatives, including online degree programs, eLearning projects, and campus- and system-wide efforts (e.g., UCLA 4 Life, Summer Sessions, UC Online), from scope definition, allocation of resources, and managing cost-recovery processes, to continuous support throughout all stages of the production process.

 • Manage studio contributions to the overall course development cycle; coordinate and approve production schedules and media content; define success metrics and participate in the continuous improvement of the course/program/eLearning module development process; develop and execute quality control and accountability processes across the studio staff.

 • Supervise, mentor, evaluate, and coordinate the day-to-day activities and project assignments of at least 2 full-time career staff; assist supervisor, the Director of Instructional Design & Media Production (IDMP) with policy and personnel matters.

 • Strategize for scaling cross-campus studio environments through workflow optimization, staffing models, technology investments, and sustainable production practices.

 • Conceptualize and direct the development of on-campus and virtual programming for instructors and graduate student teaching assistants (TAs) on innovative multimedia integration, inclusive design, multimodal teaching practices, and other key campus priorities supported by effective media design.

 • Identify, research, test, and promote emerging technologies and techniques in multimedia, digital communication, and video to produce innovative and effective media-enhanced courses and course components; Lead studio staff in projects, initiatives, and programs that encourage and support campus adoption of effective media strategies.

 • Collaborate with the TLC Assessment unit to conduct self-assessment of the media production portfolio and develop data-informed action plans for iterative improvement using data on outcomes, trends, and opportunities for growth.

 • Lead data-informed outreach strategy and initiatives that promote studio services and articulate the value and impact of media production services.

 • Collaborate with the IDMP Director to advance multimedia innovation, outreach and communications, data privacy, and large-scale digital learning initiatives (e.g., creative productions, open educational resources, generative AI, digital textbooks, experiential learning, micro credentials).

 • Represent the TLC in cross-campus and multi-campus efforts to advance teaching and learning by disseminating best practices, attending campus events, and serving on UCLA, UC, and/or national committees and working groups.

Management & Operations

 • In collaboration with the instructional design team, systematize the pre-production process such as development and integration of media elements into storyboards/outlines/style sheets, drafting scripts for video and audio learning assets, and selecting multimedia tools to support interactive engagement of learners; assign media production activities to studio staff, directing creation of audio/ video/ graphic/ animation content; oversee post-production processes such as video editing, closed-captioning, quality control efforts to ensure efficacy of multimedia integration into the LMS, and appropriate archival/storage of media assets.

 • Monitor and assess project progress using project management tools, aligning production lifecycles with instructional initiatives across UCLA schools and units.

 • Oversee the studio budget, monitoring expenses, revenues, and coordinating purchase of all studio equipment; initiate and/or review and approve all facilities and IT service requests to maintain studio space and infrastructure, etc.

 • Ensure studio infrastructure complies with university policies, accessibility standards, and safety /risk management requirements; develop contingency and continuity plans for campus disruptions and technology outages.

 • Manage and maintain equipment inventory, media library, and storage servers to organize, share, and archive digital assets according to best practices in media production.

 • Ensure media production follows quality standards and comply with institutional and regulatory requirements, including ADA/WCAG accessibility, copyright, intellectual property, data privacy, and distance education policies established by the UCLA Academic Senate.

Instructional Multimedia Production

 • Oversee the multimedia support services, including intake and consultations with departments and instructors across campus; serve as the initial point-of-contact for instructional media-related production elements of course and eLearning design projects.

 • Support instructors and TLC partners in the creation of innovative digital learning experiences by providing expertise in the design, planning/scheduling, production, writing, editing, directing, staging, evaluating, and delivery of instructional multimedia content; provide input/assist in troubleshooting and resolving related issues.

 • Collaborate with TLC units to develop on-demand educational resources, multimedia tutorials, and digital learning assets for instructors and graduate students on teaching topics that showcase effective, innovative approaches of using instructional multimedia to engage target audiences.

 • Partner with instructors, subject matter experts, educational developers, and instructional designers to determine instructional goals of media production and develop concepts for media assets (audio/ video/ graphic/ animation) and other creative components for courses/programs/eLearning modules.

 • Provide creative and technical feedback to instructors, staff, and editors, applying best practices informed by adult learning theory and multimedia design research.

 • Review media products for alignment with learning objectives, evidence-based pedagogical practices, accessibility standards, Bruin Learn ecosystem (UCLA LMS and associated ed tech tools) platform requirements, UC systemwide expectations, and industry standards.

Prepare and oversee statement of work (SOW) documentation, contractual agreements for production services, video/photo production consent forms, and copyright clearances, ensuring approvals are obtained prior to project implementation, and materials are appropriately stored according to TLC and university policy.

 • Ensure digital learning assets are created and delivered in a timely manner and according to a maintained course/program/eLearning module production calendar and budget agreed upon by all project stakeholders.

 • Collaborate with Bruin Learn Center of Excellence (and other campus partners as appropriate) to train instructors on how to use institutional technology tools to engage students with media, optimize use of video platforms, conduct data analyses, and develop guidance on media hosting and retention.

Programming & Communications

 • Lead and deliver on-campus and virtual programming related to media for teaching and learning.

 • Provide training in use of multimedia tools and media production best practices to enable instructors to develop their own video / media content, using institutionally supported or consumer-grade software and equipment.

 • Develop on-demand training materials, such as teaching guides, shared documentation, training resources, and service models in collaboration with TLC units and campus stakeholders to support effective use of media across campus.

 • Foster media innovation in the TLC and with campus units through exploration and adoption of emerging technologies and pedagogies (e.g., short-form video, podcasting, immersive and XR media).

 • Engage with TLC staff to consistently and strategically promote and communicate news, resources, and events via website, newsletter and/or listserv, and social media platforms.

 • Support production of media assets for TLC communications and resources, creating promotional videos and other digital materials that showcase TLC programming and UCLA instructor’s teaching innovations.

 • Develop workflows for TLC multimedia projects and programming efforts to create and deliver content for training instructors

 • Coordinate with TLC Communications to align branding, messaging, accessibility, and production standards.
