POSITION SUMMARY

The UCLA School of Dentistry seeks a Dental Assistant for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Clinic. The Dental Assistant provides comprehensive clinical and administrative support. This role includes chair-side assisting for a range of dental procedures including restorative, periodontal, endodontic, oral surgery, implant, and IV sedation cases. When not assisting clinically, the incumbent performs sterilization duties and supports front office operations through a scheduled monthly rotation.

CLINICAL DUTIES

1. Provide chairside assistance for all AEGD Clinic procedures, including general dentistry, surgical procedures, biopsies, extractions, and radiographic procedures, in support of faculty and residents.

2. Assist dentists and AEGD residents in screening patients for the teaching program by ensuring required documentation is completed, clinic schedules are followed, and patients are informed of clinic policies.

3. Prepare, set up, and break down operatories for clinical procedures, including placing necessary instruments and supplies in cubicles and ensuring readiness for patient care.

4. Perform dental radiography duties, including taking, developing, processing, and assisting residents with radiographs, while monitoring radiation hygiene standards established by UCLA Radiology and Radiation Safety.

5. Maintain infection control standards by disinfecting operatories and evacuation systems, sterilizing instruments, and managing supplies related to patient activities.

6. Participate in special operation and cleaning for instruments, cubicles, and supplies used for patients with infectious conditions (including AIDS and Hepatitis).

7. Change traps and prepare autoclaves

8. Monitor, test, and document equipment and sterilization processes, ensuring proper functionality and compliance with established indicators and record keeping requirements.

9. Respond to patient medical emergencies by following clinic procedures, contacting emergency response services, and providing oxygen tanks and other emergency equipment as required.

10. Perform front office and administrative support duties, including answering phones, scheduling patients, and assisting with end of year inventory audits.

11. Perform other related duties as assigned.

STERILIZATION

1. Clean, package, and sterilize instruments and trays used by faculty, residents, and students, including assembling instruments into procedure ready trays for AEGD clinical use.

2. Prep and monitor sterilization equipment, ensuring proper solution levels, temperatures, pressure gauges, and cycle indicators are within required standards prior to and during sterilization processes.

3. Maintain sterilization equipment by performing routine daily care, monitoring performance, and reporting or coordinating necessary repairs to ensure continued safe operation.

4. Store sterilized instruments and trays in designated cabinets, ensuring proper labeling, and readiness for clinical use.

5. Manage linens and related supplies, ensuring proper packaging, storage, and handling before and after turnover to cleaners.
