POSITION SUMMARY | Incumbent functions as a Dental Assistant (DA) chairside assistant in the UCLA Faculty Group Dental Practice (FGDP). The FGDP is a dental practice with more than 25 faculty general dentists and specialists. Responsibilities include performing all (DA) duties as allowed by the Dental Board of California including general dentistry, endodontics, oral and implant surgery, fixed and removable prosthodontics, pediatrics, periodontics, and orthodontics. The incumbent will perform other clinical support activities as requested by the supervisor. The DA reports to the FGDP Practice Manager and will be under the direct/general supervision of the faculty during patient care procedures when required by the Dental Board of California. The DA may also be accountable to peers placed in leadership positions within their divisional focus and responsibilities. The DA is expected to perform responsibilities independently and to prioritize and organize work to ensure that all assigned duties are completed in a timely manner including a portion of their time for miscellaneous duties. The DA is also expected to dedicate their efforts to helping others, covering when colleagues are absent, learning and expanding their industry knowledge, and generally willing to expand duties and assist with other projects as the need may arise. Delegated projects and performance are to be reviewed by the Practice Manager periodically. A performance evaluation will be undertaken on an annual basis with input regarding clinical techniques and work performance solicited from faculty dental practitioners. | | | |
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Chairside Assisting | 1. Set up assigned operatories with the appropriate armamentarium, equipment & barriers for all chairside procedures in accordance with established FGDP procedures & standards, including infection control. 2. Assist dentist in all chairside procedures as allowed by the Dental Board of California including: a) intraoral impressions for diagnostic & opposing models, bleaching trays, temporary crowns & bridges, sports guards & all non-prosthodontic appliances; b) place & remove rubber dams or other isolation devices; c) operate dental radiography equipment for the purpose of radiology in compliance under Section1656; d) perform intraoral & extraoral photography; e) after adjustment by the dentist, examine & seat removable orthodontic appliances & deliver care instructions to patients | 80% | Chairside Assisting -cont.- | f) place & remove orthodontic separators; g) place, wedge and remove matrices for restorative procedures; h) Take face bow transfers & bite registrations; i) remove post extraction & periodontal dressings. 3. Clean operatory & remove all contaminated instruments, biohazard waste, disposables, etc. after patient care in accordance with established procedures & standards, including infection control. 4. In compliance with infection control policies of the Faculty Group Dental Practice (FGDP), disinfect operatories (including evacuation systems), sterilize instruments & manage supplies related to patient activities. 5. Under well-defined & specific conditions including attending supervision, assist faculty in providing nitrous oxide analgesia/sedation. | 0% | Chairside Assisting -cont.- | 6. Follow clinic procedures during patient medical emergencies including phone calls to emergency response areas, and providing oxygen tanks & other emergency equipment as indicated. 9. Scan all necessary/important documents into patient's electronic record. 2. Review patient electronic record & insure patient procedure notes have been entered & signed by practitioner after completion of each treatment. Enter procedures & treatment charges into computer system. 3. Check & ensure all legal forms such as informed consents & treatment plans are completed & signed before dental surgeries. 4. Advise faculty practitioners of any balances that may be showing on patient's account that would be noted on the daily schedules. 5. Enter patient treatment plan into system & obtain approval from Practice Manager and/or Insurance Manager before presenting treatment to patient. 6. Make certain proper appointments are made for future treatment. | 10% | Administrative Responsibilities -cont.- | 7. Escort patient to Practice Cashier to make payments. 8. Answer patient questions concerning procedures. 9. Write up any adjustments forms for any reductions approved by practice doctor, manager. 10. Work in compliance with infection control policies in the practice related to disinfection of operatories, instrument sterilization procedures, & dispensing of sterile instruments and supplies. 2. Turn off equipment after use. 3. Maintain operatories by ensuring they are kept neat orderly in physical appearance. 4. Procure and return equipment, instruments and supplies. 5. Maintain proper levels of supplies and medicaments. Place orders with manager when stock levels are low. 6. Ensure that FGDP equipment is functional and in good working condition.
