POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Communications will advance the UCLA Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) mission to elevate and celebrate inclusive excellence in teaching by engaging our community of educators in inclusive and research-based teaching practices, instructional innovation, and pedagogical research.

 

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, the Director of Communications is responsible for developing, implementing and expanding creative and comprehensive communications and stakeholder outreach strategies that strengthen the brand of the UCLA Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) in alignment with UCLA branding and strategic communications initiatives. The Director researches current trends in communications and technology, leads the execution of the TLC digital communication strategy, and manages the design and data tracking of the TLC website, newsletters, and other digital media and communication platforms. The Director works closely with TLC program directors and administrative teams to guide, coordinate and promote programs, resources, services and events, ensuring alignment of messaging across units with the overall TLC vision and digital strategy. Through these efforts, the Director helps to raise awareness for and drive engagement of UCLA instructors, including graduate student teaching assistants, in the programming offered by the TLC through creative, accessible content.

 

Duties also include overseeing a team that develops digital and printed content such as newsletters, presentations, campus messages, video scripts, web copy, news stories, event promotional materials, social media posts, and reports. The Director provides writing and copy-editing support as needed to ensure accurancy and consistency of content across the team, manages internal and external communications requests, and tracks the status of team communications projects.

 

The Director oversees executive communications and organizational messaging on behalf of the Vice Provost. Responsibilities also include providing strategic counsel for TLC leadership and facilitating communications related to change management, instructional continuity, and other emergent communication needs.

 

The Director of Communications works independently to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and create solutions to meet project goals as assigned. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional organizational skills, be highly detail-oriented, and effectively foster collaborations with TLC and other campus partners. Performance is reviewed on an annual basis.

 

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement within the state of California. The incumbent must reside within the state of California or be willing to relocate.

To realize this mission, the TLC collaborates with instructors, leadership, and various campus partners to champion visionary ideas and forward-thinking initiatives that transform and elevate the teaching enterprise.

ʉۢ Develop and guide communications strategy for the TLC in coordination with leadership and staff, including program directors and administrative teams, to regularly promote and communicate news, programs, resources, services and events, ensuring alignment of content and messaging with strategic planning goals.

ʉۢ Research, develop, and present marketing and communication plans, including prototypes for visual content and designs/layouts; customize communications and tailor marketing to reach diverse audiences effectively.

ʉۢ Engage with TLC leadership and designated staff to customize, implement, and maintain communications campaigns and strategies, including visual branding and online digital presence.

ʉۢ Explore, analyze, and remain current in communication trends in the marketplace and emerging platforms, technology, and communications and engagement strategies.

ʉۢ Develop plans to integrate new and relevant technologies, software, and platforms quickly and effectively.

ʉۢ Inform strategic planning by identifying communication gaps and relevant trends in marketing and technology, presenting options to TLC leadership and staff, and supporting the overall project implementation process.

ʉۢ Assist in evaluation of ongoing communication strategies, including analysis of survey feedback and analytics from online platforms; report impact on internet presence and brand awareness to ensure strategies affect desired outcomes.

ʉۢ Maintain current and accurately curated mailing lists with contact information for relevant audiences and stakeholders on campus; expertly utilize digital technology, software, and platforms for deployment of website, newsletters, and other communications materials.

ʉۢ Research, identify, and develop relevant, creative, engaging, and innovative promotional materials to facilitate TLC outreach and communication goals.

ʉۢ Work with subject matter experts to develop engaging copy and other creative materials that advance the needs of TLC leadership and audiences.

Personnel Supervision

ʉۢ Supervise a minimum of two direct reports, overseeing recruitment, hiring, and promotion processes for the TLC Communications unit.

ʉۢ Supervise, train/coach/mentor, evaluate, and coordinate the activities of full-time and part-time staff involved in copywriting, editing, design in alignment with industry norms and UCLA Brand guidelines, sourcing, production, and distribution of materials, including visual media and graphic elements, required for websites, publications, promotional communications, and communications campaigns.

ʉۢ Assign tasks, set performance goals, and establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for direct reports; monitor productivity and manage workflow; conduct routine one-on-one meetings and unit-level meetings, and evaluate performance at least annually via development reviews.

Vice Provost Leadership Programming and Support Services

ʉۢ Serve as point person for coordinating communication with internal and external entities at all levels on behalf of the Vice Provost; prepare and review communications to be distributed.

ʉۢ Develop communication strategies for the Vice Provost to address both routine and non-routine activities within the unit.

ʉۢ Develop quarterly messages from the Vice Provost, highlighting important information, accomplishments, or noteworthy events to disseminate campuswide.

ʉۢ Review, revise and prepare speeches, remarks, and talking points for the Vice Provost.

ʉۢ Upon request by the Vice Provost, analyze messages for potential response; conduct research to provide greater depths of analysis of issues; direct items, as appropriate, to the Associate Vice Provost and Chief of Staff for Teaching and Learning and/or the Executive Director of the Teaching and Learning Center; consult with the Vice Provost on critical issues and actions, offering options for response, timeliness, and institutional implications.
