POSITION SUMMARY

The Teacher of the Extended Day Program (EDP) of UCLA Lab School within the Consortium of Schools in the School of

Education & Information Studies (SE&IS) is responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum for children

enrolled in the program. Primary responsibilities include curriculum implementation, supervision of children and teaching

assistants, implement a safe and healthy learning environment, establish parental interactions, and plan daily activities. The

position also requires involvement in a research school environment. There are daily interactions with various school personnel

to promote the success of the children enrolled in the program.

A1. Plan, design and set up age appropriate activities in curriculum areas, such as,

language arts, dramatic play, multicultural awareness, manipulative learning

activities, arts and crafts, block play, organized games, science, and outdoor play to

facilitate the after school program and meet the needs of the age groups served. (E)

A2. Involve assistants and volunteers in planning and supervising activities to build

community and promote active participation in the program. (E) A3. Plan and

implement a daily schedule to include times for play, napping, eating, group activities,

clean-up, opening and closing routines, homework and skill-building activities that

contribute to student learning, responsibility, and respect for others and others'

property. (E) A4. Provide written plans to other staff members and parents in to

order to increase communication of student activities and learning. (E) A5.

Implement the curriculum and supervise children on yards and indoor activities to

meet the goals of the program. (E) A6. Oversee and maintain the daily attendance

and parent sign-out sheet to maintain accurate and up to date records. (E) A7. Use

appropriate teaching practices, which are culturally sensitive in order to meet

children's emotional and cognitive needs. (E) A8. Celebrate ethnic and cultural events

and holidays that are significant to children and families and to develop learning

opportunities for children. (E) A9. Assess the developmental needs of individual

children and set appropriate goals to develop children growth and development. (E)

B1. Assist Director of EDP with on-the-job training for part-time UCLA student

employees to provide skills and knowledge in working with children. (E) B2. Provide

guidance and instruction for volunteers and student employees in the daily routines

and procedures to maintain the quality of the program. (E)

Safety and Health Environment

C1. Provide a secure, protective and healthy indoor and outdoor educational

environment for children and to gain the support of parent body. (E) C2. Maintain the

organization of all areas, including yards, classrooms, kitchen and offices to assure

the efficient use of space and materials. (E) C3. Refer children who are ill or injured

on the yard to the school nurse and administer minor first aid to children under the

direction of the school health specialist. (E) C4. Maintain certification of first aid and

C.P.R. to remain current and informed in the event of an emergency and/or the need

to administer first aid treatment. (E) C5. Meet with school health specialists to

discuss medical issues of children to remain informed of the needs and requirements

of specific children. (E) C6. Coordinate with school nurse to dispense medicine to

children prescribed by a physician and only when needed. (E) C7. Coordinate with

the Operations Coordinator to ensure all toys and equipment meets safety standards.

Parent Interactions

D1. Maintain effective and cooperative teacher/parent relationships to keep parents

informed of academic, behavioral, emotional, and physiological progress and

activities. (E) D2. Orient parents and assist parents and children with separation

issues to develop independence and confidence within a school setting. (E) D3.

Interact daily with parents and give brief accounts of children's experiences, answer

questions regarding homework and/or behaviors to increase communications and

provide support. (E) D4. Conduct parent conferences as needed to discuss child's

needs and progress and to enhance the home/school connection. (E) D5. Refer

parents to appropriate school and social service programs to provide resources to

parent community. (E) D6. Assist with the organization of yearly open house and end

of the year events to develop family relationships. (E) D7. Support the Director in

efforts to establish parent and volunteer involvement in the classroom and to increase

parents' awareness of program objectives. (E)

Administrative Responsbilities

E1. Contribute to the planning process in regards to staffing, curriculum and

philosophy, use of playground, and monitoring of the budget to meet the program

goals. (E) E2. Meet regularly with classroom teachers to discuss academic and social

needs to meet the needs of children served in the program. (E) E3. Meet with various

school personnel (teachers, nurse, principal) to discuss children with special needs

and assist in the development of individual education plan for school success. (E) E4.

Interface with UCLA researchers to facilitate the implementation of research projects

in the Extended Day Program to contribute to the research mission of the school. (E)

E5. Maintain inventories of classroom supplies, curriculum materials and place orders

for supplies and materials to maintain smooth operation of the program. (E) E6.

Document parent conferences, attendance, schedules, emergency files and

procedures for school personnel review. (E) E7. Participate and contribute in the

planning of staff meetings to build a comprehensive program. (E) E8. Attend and

actively participate in weekly staff meetings to maintain communications and

understand operations. (E) E9. Work cooperatively with all Extended Day personnel

to coordinate and develop an overall program for the children. (E) E10. Attend

classes, seminars and conferences to gain professional development growth. (E)

Skill in writing grammatically correct lesson plans and curriculum unites for children 4 to 12 years of
