POSITION SUMMARY

The UCLA School of Dentistry is seeking a Lab Technician to support operations within the DDS student laboratory. The incumbent will oversee more than 100 student workstations, ensuring that all equipment, instruments, and supplies are properly maintained and available to support student learning. Working closely with the Director of Student Labs, the Lab Technician will help manage the daily operations of the laboratory and ensure a safe, efficient, and productive learning environment.

Materials & Equipment Management

1. Conduct daily inspections of laboratory equipment, instruments, and supplies to ensure operational readiness. Maintain records of equipment requiring maintenance or repair, perform minor repairs when appropriate, and coordinate service requests with external vendors as needed.

2. Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment by working collaboratively with students to ensure individual workstations are properly maintained. Provide light custodial support to promote laboratory functionality and compliance with safety standards.

3. Manage the proper identification, handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory-generated waste in accordance with UCLA Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) requirements and all applicable governing agents.

4. Perform routine inspections of student laboratory areas to ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations, policies, and established procedures. Document findings and maintain accurate inspection records and related compliance documentation.

5. Monitor student activities within the fourth-floor laboratory and promptly report any safety concerns, policy violations, or inappropriate conduct to the Director of the Preclinical Laboratory.

6. Maintain and regularly update Laboratory Safety Manuals, ensuring the inclusion of current Safety Data Sheets (SDS), radiation safety information, laboratory protocols, and other required documentation. Coordinate and support the annual laboratory safety inspection conducted by Campus EH&S, including preparation of materials and review of laboratory practices.

7. Collaborate with Facilities Planning & Operations (FPO), School of Dentistry EH&S personnel, and external vendors with the delivery of in-service training for dental school students, instructors, and staff.

Inventory Control 

1. Maintain accurate inventories of fourth-floor laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials, including dental laboratory materials, instrument cassettes, and consumable items. Conduct inventory reviews on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis to ensure adequate stock levels and operational readiness.

2. Collaborate with the Dental Storeroom to develop, implement, and maintain an integrated ordering and receiving process that supports appropriate inventory levels of supplies, materials, equipment, instruments, cassettes, and consumables. Coordinate inventory planning to align with quarterly coursework and instructional requirements.

3. Monitor and track the use of laboratory materials and supplies, identify unusual or excessive consumption, and report potential misuse, waste, or abuse of materials to the supervisor.

4. Administer and maintain records related to the assignment and distribution of laboratory assets, including keys, locks, cabinets, lockers, and other secured storage areas used within the fourth-floor laboratories.

5. Maintain accurate records of student equipment and material usage, including lease and loan agreements. Process and submit appropriate documentation related to lost, damaged, or unreturned equipment and materials in accordance with established procedures.

6. Conduct quarterly inspections of cabinets, lockers, locks, keys, and related laboratory storage facilities to verify cleanliness, functionality, serviceability, and accurate assignment information. Correct identified deficiencies, update inventory and assignment records as needed, and submit findings to the Director.

7. Prepare and submit work orders and service requests for the repair or replacement of laboratory infrastructure and equipment, including locks, cabinets, hardware, furnishings, and related assets, to ensure the continued safety and functionality of the laboratory environment.

Lab Operations Support

1. Coordinate with course chairs and faculty to identify anticipated instructional needs prior to the start of each academic quarter, including audiovisual support, laboratory materials, specialized equipment, and other course-related requirements. Provide ongoing operational and logistical support to faculty, staff, and assigned personnel throughout the duration of each course.

2. Assist with the preparation, organization, and setup of laboratory classrooms, benches and workstations to ensure laboratory exercises and educational activities are conducted efficiently and effectively.

3. Develop and maintain detailed checklists to support effective planning, implementation of each course.

Support

1. Provide support for state board examinations and other special events or activities as needed.

2. Assist in other laboratory areas within the School of Dentistry as assigned by the Director, ensuring continuity of services and responsiveness to departmental needs.
