POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Demonstration Teacher and the Assistant Principal, provide instructional and classroom support and supervise students at the UCLA Lab School.  Duties include a wide variety of tasks involving classroom and instructional support to assist the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students. Collaborate with teaching and administrative staff to implement the day-to-day educational program at the UCLA Lab School, provide non-classroom (lunch, recess, fieldtrips, arrival/dismissal) supervision for students as assigned and provide non-instructional assistance to office staff and teachers. Please note, this position is subject to possible curtailment during breaks and summer months.


Department Summary

Housed under the newly developed University Consortium of Schools (previously PreK-12), the UCLA Lab School is an innovative school for

children ages 4-12 and a laboratory for teachers and researchers in the School of Education & Information Studies (SE&IS) at UCLA. The

Business Office manages and supports an annual budget of $11 million and manages over 100+ academic and career employees, 30+

student workers, independent contractors, and volunteers.

Classroom Support

Meet with teacher on a daily basis to discuss the lesson plans and activities to be administered to the children to ensure daily plans are followed. Assist with setting up materials for lessons and activities as needed throughout the day. Collect, prepare, and organize materials necessary to carry out the lessons for the day (i.e. math manipulatives, art materials, special equipment for science, construction paper, etc.), and order supplies for the classroom on a weekly basis.Set up areas: the dramatic play, arts and crafts, block play, science, outdoor play areas, etc. that are aligned with the lessons for the day. Assist with the transition routines from activity to activity and movement to different locations within the school as needed. Initiate and implement the cleaning of areas of use including classroom areas and patio eating areas on an on-going basis to keep a healthy, clean, and safe environment for all children. Communicate with the teacher on an on-going basis any concerns relevant to student and classroom issues to minimize any learning distractions and promote a positive learning environment for the student.  Distribute assignments, collect them when they are completed and maintain record keeping for students on a daily basis. Enforce administration policies and rules as they relate to student behavior codes to ensure student's safety and w is maintained in a positive learning environment. Prepare and present displays of students' work on a regular basis so parents and community can view ongoing accomplishments Assist classroom teachers with photocopying and other administrative tasks in order to support teaching on a regular basis. Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably assigned by the head teacher.

Instructional Support

Assist the teacher by providing one-on-one or small group instructional support and follow-up lessons to students as directed by the classroom teacher. Monitor and ensure that the students are following directions and are on assigned task everyday. Direct and assist students on an as-needed basis in classroom duties and assignments to ensure assignments are completed by deadline.              Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods. Tutor and assist children individually, in small groups or at times in larger groups in order to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers. Assist classroom teacher with the instructional technology, applications and computer-based instructional tools to enhance student learning. Assist in the educational and social development of pupils by monitoring classroom behaviors and interactions to achieve productive work habits and positive relationships with other students under the direction and guidance of the head teacher and resource personnel. Under the guidance from head teacher, provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to encourage them to fully participate in activities. Work with other professionals, such as speech therapists and occupational therapists to support identified strategies to assist children to meet learning objectives. Support students with emotional or behavioral problems and help develop their social skills under the direction of the school psychologist and safe school specialist by supporting prescribed methodologies and reporting inappropriate behaviors to these experts.

Other Administrative Duties

Supervise students during the lunch period and on the playground to ensure they are orderly and safe while eating and playing.              Provide assistance to teacher as needed with students problem-resolution. Supervise students on an on-going basis in classrooms, halls, lunch tables, schoolyards, play equipment and structures and/or on field trips to ensure their safety. Demonstrate professional behavior at all times and in all circumstances that promotes a positive influence on the students educational, social, and emotional learning environment, including dress, punctuality and attendance. Attend team and staff meetings and participate in the on-going training of the Safe School Program to stay up-to-date with changes. Apply a proactive approach with monitoring student behavior in matters relating to health and safety to ensure positive work and play habits in the school, setting.
