POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Heavy Duty Technician Supervisor, the Heavy Duty Technician will coordinate routine maintenance, repair and inspection, and assignment of daily work for vehicle maintenance staff. The Heavy Duty Technician performs inspections, maintenance, service, and repair of University heavy-duty vehicles. The incumbent assists with oversight and maintenance of the Transit CNG fueling station and/or heavy-duty electric vehicle chargers and ensures compliance with California vehicle code, Title 13, federal, state and DOT/CHP regulations.

Routine Heavy-Duty Preventive Maintenance

1. Perform heavy-duty vehicle inspections in accordance Department of Transportation regulations for buses and heavy-duty vehicles. (E)  2. Perform routine services such as lubrication, tire replacement & repair, and wheel balancing. (E)  3. Perform routine adjustments on fan belts, air and hydraulic brakes, and other automotive systems (E)  4. Perform tune ups and Biennial Inspection of Terminals (BIT) in accordance with the California Highway Patrol regulations. (E)  5. Maintain the working area, service yard, CNG station, and electric vehicle chargers in a clean and orderly condition, in compliance with safety regulations. (E)  6. Open work orders utilizing Maintenance Software Package and maintain all maintenance service records. (E)  7. Ensure all work orders reflect accurate time/material usage. Ensure work order and parts issued match service/repair performed. Review all work order data prior to closing work order. (E)  8. Prepare diagnostic reports reflecting mechanical or electrical malfunctions on vehicles and buses. (E) 9. Complete work orders and document repairs in (FA) Fleet anywhere fleet management software respond to emails and Teams notifications as well as open work orders.

Heavy-Duty Vehicle Repair and Service

1. Remove, disassemble, replace or repair gasoline, diesel, CNG, and battery-electric engines and motors, transmissions, drive train, steering, brakes, exhaust, cooling, heating, air-conditioning, electrical/mechanical hydraulic systems, suspension, differential/axles, starting and charging systems, and miscellaneous body and chassis components on buses and heavy duty vehicles. (E)  2. Use electric schematic and hydraulic diagrams in the diagnosis and repair of heavy-duty vehicles. (E)  3. Perform services and fueling on a variety of heavy-duty fuel technologies including gas, diesel, CNG, hybrid, and electric heavy-duty vehicles. (E)  4. Coordinate initial preparation of new vehicles including receipt from manufacturer or vendor, inspection of aftermarket and safety equipment, input into vehicle database and delivery to customer. (E)  5. Road test and inspect heavy-duty vehicles and buses. (E)  6. Perform road service and assist in recovering inoperable heavy-duty vehicles and buses. (E) 7. Complete work orders and document repairs in (FA) Fleet anywhere fleet management software respond to emails and Teams notifications as well as open work orders. 8. Respond to completion time inquiries and technical information from vehicle maintenance administrative staff and customers. (E)  (E)  9. Ensure the timely completion of repairs, service, and maintenance. (E)  10. Maintain the continuous flow of quality maintenance services and products from Heavy-Duty Vehicle Maintenance. (E)  11. Coordinate with departments, vendors, and customers all repairs and modifications necessary for the timely return of vehicles to service. (E)  12. Ensure coverage of technicians when out sick or on vacation. (E)  13. Perform day-to-day maintenance of the CNG fuel station and/or heavy-duty electric vehicle chargers. (E)  14. Ensure compliance with audit, hazmat and OSHA as well as other safety regulations and proper precautions to maintain a safe working environment. (E)  15. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and county regulations including but not limited to Vehicle Code and Title 13 of the Administrative Code. (E)  16. Act as lead in federal, state, and county mandated inspections and correction of deficiencies including but not limited to California Highway Patrol and Waste Management inspections. (E)  17. Coordinate efforts and ensure coverage of the primary on call system, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. (E) 18. Diagnose and correct electrical and mechanical malfunctions using appropriate diagnostic equipment. (E)  19. Remove, disassemble, replace or repair engines, transmissions, drive trains, steering, brakes, exhaust, cooling, heating, air-conditioning, electrical/mechanical hydraulic systems, and miscellaneous body and chassis components. 1. Demonstrated skill in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite and the Assetworks FA Fleet Management Information System, and the Geotab telematics monitoring interface. Skill in operating a diagnostic computer and related software packages.
