POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Basketball Equipment Operations is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation and supervising the equipment operations of both basketball programs.  This position will be under the general supervision of the Associate Athletics Director, Equipment Operations working specifically with both programs that includes approximately 30 student-athletes and a combination of 30 coaches and support staff members.  Successful candidate will be responsible for being hands-on in the equipment room operations, including supervising two full-time employees and student managers, monitoring, and distribution of all equipment and apparel for the UCLA basketball programs. The individual will be responsible for managing the relationship with the Jumpman and Wilson Brands, fulfilling all contractual obligations.  Other duties include collaborating with the Associate Athletics Director when as it pertains to inventory tracking, locker room maintenance, facility upkeep, ensuring the safety of team issued gear and practice and training items, as well as oversight of staff issued apparel.  Position will serve as a primary contact for both programs facilitating team needs for both home and road contests, preparing uniforms and necessary apparel for all athletic contests – both at home and on the road, and potentially off-site practice locations.  Duties will also include recruiting student managers, assisting with recruiting events and camp operational needs, and daily laundry services to meet team needs.

 • Collaborate with the Associate Athletics Director, reviewing team requests and needs during championship and non-championship season, recruiting periods, and team related activities and workouts.

 • Fit all athletes with proper equipment/apparel for their respective position, insuring their maximum protection, fit, size, and proper appearance.  This includes all footwear and additional protective gear.

 • Understand current equipment and apparel for inventory and ordering needs of product for current and future use.

 • Serve as team’s primary contact with shoe and apparel provider.  Possess a general understanding for how to properly budget and utilize funds under the direction of the Associate Athletics Director, Equipment Operations.

 • Research and review new equipment offerings to determine its suitability for the Basketball programs.

 • Properly receive, issue, and store practice and competition equipment/apparel.

 • Act as an integral member of department equipment team to service teams with highest level of service and professionalism.

 • Inspect all equipment and apparel regularly for any maintenance issues and determine if repairable.  Make repairs as needed.

 • Possess an understanding for what equipment is needed in all conditions as it pertains directly to basketball.

Equipment Purchasing and Procurement

 • Develop an understanding for how to make purchases with the business and finance department.

 • Understand current shoe and apparel contract and the various aspects of team related needs with all needed vendors.

 • Understand the budget by working hands-on with the Associate Athletics Director, Equipment Operations during the procurement process.

 • Utilize past knowledge in order to advance the basketball equipment operation and serve as a resource for the Director of Basketball Operations. Specifically, bring new ideas for how to enhance the facility, maximize resources, and manage student-managers. 

 • Basic knowledge regarding logistics so all shipments are properly tracked and received.

Storage & Inventory

 • Understand and comply with department standards in terms of Inventory policy.

 • Manage the stocking and storage of equipment and apparel using provided storage capacities.

 • Execute reconditioning annually, including but not limited to the all safety equipment. 

 • Keep detailed inventory records on all items received, issued, distributed and returned.

 • Utilize the Departments Inventory Software to track, issues, and retrieve all items for taxation purposes. 

 • Collaborate with the Senior director to develop a system for tracking and maintaining equipment.

Basketball Equipment Room Administration

 • Assist in the supervision of 2 full-time employees and student-managers, including potential day of game staffing. 

 • Work in conjunction with the Associate Athletics Director to plan, review, and forecast the equipment budgets.

 • Assign lockers and locks to student athletes, coaches and staff in designated areas.

 • Ensure the locker room and equipment room are organized at all times.

 • Attend trade shows and conferences and meet with vendors to maintain current knowledge of the equipment business as it pertains to the basketball programs, as needed.

Equipment Transportation and Maintenance

 • Pack all equipment and apparel required for each game and / or offsite practice, including but not limited to home games, road games, championship games and pre-season team practices, as needed.

 • Collaborate with the Director of Basketball Operations to ensure all team equipment is packed, loaded, and shipped to both home and visiting venues.

 • Serve as a primary contact on game day for additional team service needs and collaborate with game operations staff to execute team needs.

 • Develop methods to efficiently and effectively load/unload equipment at each site and setup/breakdown to accommodate all team related needs.

 • Set-up team locker room and equipment room before the team arrives.

Equipment Transportation and Maintenance

 • During competition, ensure all equipment is properly fit for student-athletes.  Monitor equipment constantly for breakage and/or flaws.  Repair and change as required.

 • Comply with all Federal, State, University and Department requirements established pursuant to Title IX, including the mandatory reporting requirements for a “Responsible Employee.”

 • The DIA is governed by the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and University of California System.  The incumbent is required to comply with the applicable rules, regulations and policies of those organizations.

    ◦ Review and retain all rules compliance disseminated by the DIA Compliance office.

    ◦ Report all NCAA and conference violations.

    ◦ Sign the annual NCAA Certification of Compliance form.

    ◦ Complete the Athletically-Related Income form annually.

    ◦ Comply with California State Child Abuse & Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) Law and adhere to mandatory reporting guidelines.
