POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the UCLA Recreation Director of Athletic Training Services, the Athletic Trainer provides high-level injury prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation services to UCLA Club Sports student-athletes, the UCLA Spirit Squad, and Bruinettes. The Athletic Trainer coordinates continuity of care between the Club Sports Athletic Training Center and The Ashe Center, supports the concussion management program, and assists in athletic training services for various teams to include: coordination and review of physicals exams for teams, evaluation and treatment of injuries, concussion baseline assessments, design and supervision of rehabilitation programs, evening clinical and weekend event coverage, and supervision of student support staff. The position also involves staff education, department committee opportunities, and collaboration across campus departments to deliver comprehensive care to UCLA students and athletes.

 


Department Summary

UCLA Recreation is a large department within the Division of Campus Life in Student Affairs with approximately 90 full-time career and contract and over 1,000 part-time employees. UCLA Recreation provides extensive access to a broad range of recreational activities and wellbeing services, and offers programming which encompasses the competitive, passive, social, cultural, and instructional aspects of recreational activity. In addition, the department manages 15 of the University's recreational and athletic facilities offering recreation, competition, and numerous multi-use options for student and university events.

Club Sport and Student Athlete Care

 Provide athletic injury prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation to UCLA Club Sports athletes and the UCLA Spirit Squad. Evaluate and treat injuries during practices and competitions, ensuring proper referral to team physicians or Ashe Center providers as per Sports Medicine guidelines. Design and supervise individualized rehabilitation and injury prevention programs, coordinate pre-participation physicals, and baseline concussion testing. Maintain detailed documentation of all athlete encounters, treatments, and progress in both written and electronic records. Communicate clearance status and updates with coaches, medical staff, and conditioning personnel, ensuring safe return-to-play decisions.

1. Coordinate, at a high level, athletic injury prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation to UCLA Club Athletes and UCLA Spirit Squad.

2. Share responsibility of Athletic Training services for various teams as assigned by the Director of Athletic Training Services. Training services to include: coordination and review of physical exams for club sport teams, evaluation and treatment of injuries, coordinate concussion baseline testing, design and supervision of rehabilitation programs, and organize injury prevention programs

3. Evaluation and treatment of injuries at all practice sessions and games.

4. Refer injured athletes to appropriate UCLA team physicians as per guidelines in the UCLA Sports Medicine Manual. 

5. Supervise and counsel Student Assistants assigned to the clinic.

6. Communication and documentation of athlete progress to athletic training staff, physicians, conditioning staff and coaches.

7. Maintain written and computerized documentation on all athletes' injuries, treatments and rehabilitation as per guidelines in the UCLA Manual.

8. Submits injured athlete status report to coaches and the Director of Athletic Training Services at designated times.

9. Manage and maintain athletic training supply inventory. Oversee and document club sport medical kit check-in/out.

10. Serve as a liaison to UCLA Steve Tish BrainSPORT group for referred care of moderate-severe traumatic brain injuries.

11. Assist in maintaining club registrants’ medical clearance in Club Sports Registration software Ideal Logic.

Training and Supervision

1. Organize informative bi-monthly instructional in-service seminars top progress level of rehabilitation knowledge of the entire staff.

2. Organize guest lecturers and practical laboratories to enhance staff professional development.

3. Maintain necessary units of clinical education per requirements of the NATA by attending courses and/or following criterion outlined by the institution.

4. Assist in the organization of an All-Staff Athletic Training Meeting involving an in-depth day of lectures and laboratories pertaining to new developments in research or a particular body part.

5. Supervise Student Assistants to ensure timely advancement in the student athletic trainer internship program. Supervise Sports Medicine Volunteer program. Oversee volunteer clinical skills check-offs and coordinate in-service opportunities.

6. Serve as a clinical preceptor to Cal Statue University Northridge and Cal State University Long Beach athletic training students. Maintain clinical preceptor status by attending mandatory clinical preceptor workshops and off-campus ATS board exams.

7. Complete online mandatory trainings and in-person trainings assigned by the UCLA Club Sports Medical Director of the UCLA Ashe Student Health Center.

8. Schedule and coordinate part-time athletic trainers to in-clinic and weekend event assignments.

9. Work with supervisor and departmental HR to review and approve all timesheets, following required guidelines and timelines.

10. Submits quarterly reports to Director of Athletic Training Services pertaining to injury surveillance, contact logs, inventory, and staffing.

11. Maintain compliance with all required employee training and credentialing standards established by the UCLA Department of Recreation and Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center.

Other Duties as Assigned

1. Perform monthly safety checks on all rehabilitation equipment, organize maintenance and repairs, and evaluate need for purchasing new equipment.

2. Work with representatives from rehab equipment companies to select best and most cost effective goods - including, but not limited to: braces, strengthening and stretching devices, electrical modalities, etc...

3. Comply with all Department rules and regulations as well as those of other applicable governing bodies.

4. Perform other administrative duties as assigned by the Director of Athletic Training Services.

5. Serve in Recreational committees and subcommittees: (a) Recreational Student Internship Committee; (b) Club Sports Executive Council; and (c) Club Sports Safety Officer training.

6. Serve as a First/Aid CPR Instructor for the UCLA Recreation Department.

7. Meet with Competitive Sports Staff weekly to debrief and review weekend event/game logistics. Attend quarterly UCLA Club Sports General Assembly Meetings to present athletic training-specific policies and procedures.

8. Attend quarterly cross-departmental meetings to foster collaboration (i.e. UCLA Campus-Wide Eating Disorder Partnership Meeting, Ashe AT/PT/Acupuncturist Meeting, and UCLA Sports Medicine Noon Conference).
