GENERAL DIRECTION - Indicates that the incumbent receives guidance in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is responsible for establishing the methods to attain them. Generally the incumbent is in charge of an area of work, and typically formulates policy for this area but does not necessarily have final authority for approving policy.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Director serves as a key technical leader within the Application Development team, responsible for designing, building, testing, and documenting modern line-of-business applications that support the strategic and operational needs of the UCLA School of Law. The role conducts in-depth systems and technical analysis; leads application and database design; and contributes to the development of secure, scalable, performant, and maintainable solutions across Law School environments.

 

The incumbent is an experienced full‑stack engineer proficient in current client‑side frameworks and server‑side development, with deep expertise in the .NET ecosystem. The position partners closely with vendors, campus technology units, and internal departments to evaluate needs, recommend solutions aligned with Law School technology standards, and guide the selection and integration of new applications.

 

Responsibilities include overseeing the maintenance, enhancement, and customization of client‑facing and back-end components; developing new systems and features; and modernizing existing applications to improve performance, usability, and long‑term sustainability. The Associate Director ensures that all development follows established engineering practices, including secure coding standards, testing, and the use of approved development toolsets.

1.) Leads the design and development of modern web applications using the Microsoft .NET ecosystem, cloud-ready architectures, and JavaScript frameworks, ensuring scalable and maintainable solutions. (E) 2.) Participates and facilitates requirements and design sessions to define application features, service scope and system architecture aligned with best practices. (E) 3.) Designs, publishes and consumes RESTful APIs and service integrations to connect platforms with third-party and vendor systems, ensuring secure, reliable, and standards interoperability. (E) 4.) Develops data models and manages application data storage using Microsoft SQL Server using modern practices, performance tuning, indexing and data integrity. (E)

(E). 2) Develops user guides, tutorials, and reference materials that enable the broader Law School community to confidently navigate web-based systems and complete common tasks with ease. (E) 3) Designs and delivers training sessions, workshops, and user/group presentations that highlight opportunities for effective use of databases, web applications, and emerging digital tools, fostering a culture of informed and empowered system usage. (E)

Provides individualized and group training, consultation for Law School faculty, staff, and students, supporting effective use of applications, databases, and tools promoting digital confidence and self-sufficiency. (E) 2) Establishes and facilitates a collaborative web development community of practice, bringing together developers and stakeholders to assess needs, share best practices, and respond to evolving technical and design requirements across the Law School. (E) 3) Evaluates web-related support requests, identifies patterns and root causes, and proactively develops guides/learning resources to reduce recurring issues and strengthen user capability. (E). 4) Help onboard developers by providing guidance and standards, toolsets, workflows, and institutional practices.
