POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Housing & Hospitality (H&H) is responsible for providing the vision and strategic leadership for an expansive, high quality portfolio of self-supporting auxiliary services with an annual operating budget of more than $570M and with the objective of ensuring long-term financial viability, developing policy, and directing and controlling activities for the following functional areas: on-campus student housing and residential dining services (over 15,000 student residents and 7 million meals annually); University Apartments (10,000 residents in roughly over 5,000 off-campus apartments at 30 separate locations); Faculty Housing (300 apartments for 300 faculty and staff families located on campus),and a large Hospitality enterprise that includes the  Lake Arrowhead Lodge and BRUIN WOODS Family Resort (a variety of accommodations including single rooms, condolets, and full chalets accommodating up to 400 people daily during peak season and up to 200 guests during the lodge and conference season), the Inn at UCLA (61-room boutique hotel); the Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center (the four star/four diamond 254 guest room hotel, with more than 25,000 square feet of meeting space, and a full-service restaurant on-site), UCLA Conference Services; UCLA Catering; UCLA Vending (serving more than 300 campus locations and managing the UCLA Coffee Service), and the UCLA University Club (provides meeting and dining space to membership made up of faculty, staff, and administration).

 


Department Summary

UCLA Housing & Hospitality (H&H) strives to meet its bi-partite mission of "Transforming UCLA from a Commuter to Residential Campus" and "Creating Environments that Empower People to Reach Their Fullest Potential."  The department employs approximately 2,600 team members and is comprised of operational and support units. 

 

The student housing and dining units create safe, well-maintained, and inviting living environments home to more than 16,000 students, faculty, and staff. The H&H team manages every operational aspect of UCLA’s housing program. This includes implementing long-range campus housing plans to managing the everyday operating and service details of the housing facilities. H&H provides dining, housekeeping, maintenance, and resident services to those living in UCLA’s on-campus residential complexes and off-campus university apartment complexes via the student housing and dining units: Dining Services, Housing Services (managing student housing contracts and support services), the Rooms Division (on-campus housing), and University Apartments (off-campus housing).

 

The UCLA hospitality team creates welcoming events in conference centers on campus and at Lake Arrowhead, to bring people together to learn, collaborate, celebrate, and engage. The team’s expertise in facilities and food service management is key to offering exceptional hospitality services. Our H&H hospitality group includes the UCLA Meyer & Renee Luskin Conference Center, the Inn at UCLA, the Lake Arrowhead Lodge, the UCLA Faculty Club, and the UCLA Conferences & Catering facilities.

Vision, Leadership and Strategic Planning

• Networks effectively with UCLA officials, professionals at other colleges and Universities and within the hospitality industry, as well as our residents and guests to ensure that venues, programs, and services are far-reaching, cutting-edge, and encompass the housing and hospitality needs.

• Develops and manages short and long-term business plans incorporating strategic visions and financial and market forecasts. Ensure that strategic initiatives are derived from empirical data, including UCLA vision, guest and team member satisfaction, and financial results

• Models community outreach and actively supports organizational outreach efforts

• Leads department heads in goal-setting and long-range planning activities

 • Develops communication strategies using a variety of mediums, including print and web sources, and initiate monitoring processes to help ensure consistency of organizational-wide messages related to strategic planning and organizational performance

• Provides marketing and communications expertise in support of the business and financial plans.

• Provides public relations expertise to the H&H program, including by meeting with media, and constituents

• Spearheads new concept development for guest service,operational efficiencies, and value creation

• Consults with campus officials and stakeholders to ensure the continued growth of the capital program within UCLA H&H. Provides expertise, industry knowledge, and operational concerns in ensuring appropriate decision-making

• Sets and leads H&H in achieving criteria in the six H&H division-wide performance goal areas: Guest Satisfaction, Organizational Climate, Improved Business Processes and Innovation, Learning, Financial Management, and Social Responsibility

• Working on site and traveling to offsite facilities as needed to manage overall operations and ensure quality expectations

• Ensures facilities meet safety, sanitation, appearance, and product quality expectations

• Oversees the work of consultants in multi-million dollar construction projects as well as those hired to study efficiencies, guest satisfaction, employee satisfaction, needs assessments, marketing studies, and other endeavors

• Collaborates with campus stakeholders in related property acquisitions
