POSITION SUMMARY

The California Mathematics Project (CMP) provides professional development and leadership training for teachers of mathematics. The CMP Executive Director provides leadership for the  Statewide Project and CMP regional sites in the  context of the  California Subject Matter Project  (CSMP) model  and mission as one of nine  discipline-based projects in the  CSMP network administered by the  University of California (UC). CMP provides support to teachers to develop and enhance the  content knowledge and pedagogical skills  necessary to implement State  Board  of Education Standards, supports the improvement of mathematics education, and supports the  development of long-term partnerships with low-performing schools  and high  need  schools.

The California Mathematics Project (CMP) is dedicated to enhancing mathematics education by providing high-quality professional development and leadership training for teachers across California. As part of the UCLA School of Education & Information Studies, CMP works to improve instructional practices, deepen teachers’ mathematical knowledge, and promote equity in mathematics education.

 

CMP collaborates with educators, schools, and districts to develop research-based strategies that enhance student learning and engagement in mathematics. Through workshops, coaching, and leadership programs, CMP empowers teachers to create effective, inclusive, and innovative classroom environments.

 

With a commitment to equity and excellence, CMP ensures that all students—especially those from historically underserved communities—have access to high-quality mathematics instruction. By fostering a network of skilled and knowledgeable educators, CMP plays a crucial role in advancing mathematics education and student success throughout California.

Academic Leadership and Discipline¡ Specific Network Support

1. Academic Leadership, Discipline-Specific Network Support, and Technical Assistance:  Provide academic leadership to Site Directors in the design and implementation of quality professional development that supports the State adopted California Version of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (caCCSS-M), increases teachers' content knowledge, discipline based pedagogy and results in student learning.

 

2. Lead a collegial discipline-specific network designed to increase student achievement in mathematics through a rigorous teacher leadership professional development program.

 

3. Build and sustain intersegmental institutional support by consulting with appropriate host institution faculty and campus officers. Work with other collaborating agencies to secure academic support for the project.

 

4. Identify, review and regularly communicate research findings for discipline specific professional development, which responds to new challenges in the field.

 

5. Be a liaison among K-12 educators, university researchers and academic specialists to support K-16 goals for articulation in the content area.

 

6. Anticipate and respond to individual and sub-group student differences in readiness level, interests, learning profiles and outcomes in the content area.

 

7. Provide technical assistance and support to Site Directors , especially those who are new to the network, to help them to identify the indicators of high quality professional development, to support and implement the laws and regulations that guide K -12 education, to secure extensive extramural grants and contracts with local school districts, and to support  CSMP goals.

 

8. Provide structured  and expert assistance to Site Directors for the development of research-based professional development programs. Establish a process for continuous monitoring and accountability for the network by examining all relevant data and reports of research in order to ensure that each site and the network as a whole is providing the highest quality professional development activities for participants and realizing statewide CSMP goals.

 

9. Plan to correct, remove or replace low quality professional development sites.

 

10. Ensure that evaluation of CMP programs, local and Statewide are designed, organized, conducted and completed, and that the results are publicized and inform CMP and CSMP practice.

 

11. Develop discipline-specific research. Conduct continuous needs assessments in the field, identify new demographical trends and curriculum needs in the discipline, inform curriculum review and adoption cycles, such as, publications, revisions of new frameworks and standards documents, State Board adoptions and assessments.

 

12. Collaborate and build alliances with the discipline's business community, professional organizations legislative, state agencies, and other stakeholders in the field in order to coordinate professional development offerings and maximize the Project's impact and resources.

1. Financial Management, Evaluation, Compliance, and Communications: Effectively  manage CMP budget.

 

2. Meet accountability and organizational deadlines, schedule and facilitate Advisory Board meetings for the review of site proposals and budgets and the formulation of recommendations to the Concurrence Committee and the CSMP Statewide Director.

 

3. Manage the network's financial resources and leverage the state and federal funds to acquire additional fiscal and human resources through extensive grant writing to maximize the Project's impact on students, teachers and schools.

 

4. Build site director capacity in the area of resource development by providing ongoing coaching in grant writing and development strategies to leverage CSMP funding.

 

5. Monitor site performance and assess the overall quality of Subject specific network professional development programs and keep abreast of the key research findings regarding high quality professional development and effective pedagogy in the subject.

 

6. Draft interim and final reports to provide timely progress updates for state and federal funded programs, monitor the Project's data on the CSMP Online Admin System and disseminate the appropriate reports to Site Directors and Advisory Board members.

 

7. Ensure that network sites comply with the terms and conditions of Project agreements, budget management, CSMP and state and federal requirements, contract and administrative guidelines, budgetary and programmatic reporting requirements, and policies and practices of CSMP and the respective host institution.

 

8. Participate in meetings that are scheduled by the CSMP Statewide Director and the Concurrence Committee to foster a coherent and coordinated approach to providing professional development programs to schools and districts.

Technical Assistance for Improving Teacher and Student Learning

1. Provide direction and technical assistance for regional and statewide efforts to improve teacher and student learning:  Communicate the CSMP vision and the Concurrence Committee's perspectives regarding the development and implementation of high quality professional development programs and the role it plays in providing students with highly qualified teachers. Serve as a liaison between regional sites and facilitate communication among the CSMP leadership and Site Directors from different subject areas.

 

2. Provide technical assistance and support to implement regional plans for professional development.

 

3. Assist in identifying CSMP network and other relevant resources appropriate to addressing the professional development needs of various regions and guide the development of regional plans that are based on locally identified needs.

 

4. Advise the CSMP Statewide Director and the members of the Concurrence Committee on special challenges faced by region(s) and seek their counsel regarding possible solutions to address them. Facilitate communication and interaction between other professional development and support providers statewide and regionally such as county offices of education, California Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (CAMTE), Regional System of District and School Support (RSDSS) directors, BTSA, etc.

 

5. Collaborate with the CSMP Statewide Director and other colleagues to expand teachers' access to quality professional learning and provide year¡ round support in all regions using digital programs and communications as appropriate. Provide statewide scale-up of successful activities and programs that impact student learning.
