POSITION SUMMARY | Geffen Academy at UCLA is seeking a Learning Specialist who works closely with students, educators, parents/guardians, and administrators to support students with diverse learning needs, ensuring all students experience access to success in their classrooms. The Learning Specialist, under the direction of the Manager of Student Counseling and Learning Services, oversees a caseload of students with individual learning needs. This includes, but is not limited to: updating and maintaining records for students with Student Support Plans; providing executive function coaching, study skills instruction; and course work support; and meeting and communicating with families Additionally, the Learning Specialist collaborates with and assists educators in implementing effective research-based strategies, differentiated instruction, and the implementation of accommodations for students. Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions | Function | Responsibilities | % Time | Learning Specialist | • Responsible for the improvement and continuation of best teaching practices and learning support processes for students with identified learning needs through educator consultation, program development, and professional development. • Advise families, students, and educators on the implementation of student support/accommodation plans for students with documented learning needs; ensure students are receiving appropriate accommodations. • Independently manage the caseload of the office by meeting regularly with students with learning needs, to improve academic functioning. • Responsible for the decision-making for intervention development for both middle school and upper school students in individual and group settings. • Expand the Learning Specialist's role in the Academic Lab program by creating small group intervention that focuses on skill building for students in the areas of executive functioning, study skills, time management, work completion, assessment preparation, and scheduling. • Independently direct educators in the implementation of accommodations, differentiation practices, and scaffolding methods through student observation and review of records. • Lead professional development and educator team meetings while also maintaining regular communication with educators. • Work with educators in classrooms to help them adjust to the learning plans, enrich curricular approaches and improve pedagogy. • Represent the Learning Specialist Office in student support team meetings to review individual students' needs and progress; provide consultation regarding students with learning profiles. • Coordinate the provision of testing accommodations with educators, including school wide testing (finals). • Oversee the coordination and monitoring of BruinCorp and Study Hall as an intervention for individual students in the LSO. • Assist the Registrar and Divisional Directors with the placement of students in class sections. • Observe students displaying academic or behavioral difficulties to assess their learning strengths and challenges. • Inform academic support recommendations such as points of growth as well as offer direction to classroom educators. • Independently compose and disseminate feedback regarding student progress and next steps in the student support process to stakeholders: students, parents/guardians, Educators, coaches, counselors, and the Manager of Counseling and Learning Services. • Execute administrative duties for programming and documentation purposes as needed. • Uphold and enhance the Geffen Academy mission, vision, and values, and aid in the creation of an inclusive and supportive culture around learning and diversity. • Be up-to-date on current research and best practices, and innovative methods in learning, differentiation, and teaching, be well-versed with the language around learning needs, diverse learners, and public and independent school policies around diverse learners. • Encourage and cultivate a mindset of openness and support for diverse learners through the provision of educational materials, resources, and scholarly research/literature around inclusive learning environments that help educators, students, and families understand a myriad of learning differences. • Communicate clearly, persuasively, and professionally with all school constituents; regularly update students, parents, and educators with student needs, progress, and notes. • Risk Management: Perform assessments of cases and notify supervisor of high-risk cases that may require additional reporting and management. • Facilitate training and present to educators. Create and/or implement flowcharts, communication processes and workflows that ensure clear communication and expectations to stakeholders. • In supervisor’s absence, act as the point of contact for the Learning Specialist Office duties, responsibilities, and functioning. | 60% | Development and Management of Records & Compliance | • Primary point of contact for families and students for implementation of policies that make academic accommodations and student support accessible. • Manage the documentation and recordkeeping of the Learning Specialist Office caseload through the development of Student Support Plans, requiring specific expertise in academic intervention in the areas of reading, writing, math, and world languages. • Lead Student Support Plan meetings with families to review recommended accommodations and integrate the family into the Learning Specialist Office. This includes, but isn’t limited to introductory student meetings, notifying students’ educators of the Student Support Plan and offering consultation, scheduling recurring student meetings, sharing progress updates with parents, overseeing the effective implementation of the Student Support Plan with all stakeholders, and updating student records. Work effectively with families who have students with specific and diverse needs, while still maintaining a large caseload of students overall. • Utilize expert analytical skills to independently develop SSPs from psychoeducational reports, neuropsychological reports, IEPs, 504 plans, and other documents. • Interface with private specialists, public agencies, and in-school entities (educators, parents, and students) to coordinate and maintain students’ access to education • Synthesize information within the reports noted above to determine how to implement accommodations and ensure effective roll out to all stakeholders. • Audit electronic records to ensure documentation is up to date and compliant with handbook policies. • Manage electronic records across multiple platforms (blackbaud, BOX, etc) • Organize, update, and maintain sensitive student records. Including but not limited to: updating permissions assigned to digitally-accessible records, reviewing physical and digital filing systems, and requesting updated documentation as needed. • Notify and provide access for stakeholders (educators, parents, students, coaches, etc) when a student has a new or updated Student Support Plan. • Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and other communications appropriate to ethical and professional standards. Exercise the utmost discretion in managing sensitive information learned in the course of performing their duties. Follow all organizational policies and laws on data protection and privacy.
