POSITION SUMMARY

Geffen Academy at UCLA is seeking a Learning Specialist who works closely with educators, parents/caretakers, and administrators to support students with diverse learning needs and ensure all students experience success in their classrooms. Specifically, the Learning Specialist collaborates with and assists educators in implementing effective research-based strategies, differentiated instruction, and implementation of accommodations for the Middle School and Upper School (grades 6-12). The Learning Specialist, under the direction and reporting to the Principal Learning Specialist, maintains a caseload of students with individual learning needs and provides executive functioning coaching, study skills instruction, and reading/writing/math/world languages/electives support to these students. The Learning Specialist is an integral member of the Student Support Team along with the school's Deans of Students and Academic Deans.

Learning Specialist

1. Contribute to the improvement and continuation of an overall teaching and learning practice and process for students with learning needs in conjunction with the Principal Learning Specialist and other school leaders.

2. Under the direction of the Principal Learning Specialist, review existing IEPs, 504 plans, neuropsychological evaluations, and other documents on student files and determine how to implement accommodations as delineated by the Student Support Plan developed by Principal Learning Specialist.

3. Consult with educators regarding the implementation of student support/accommodation plans for students with documented learning needs; ensure students are receiving appropriate accommodations

4. Continue to grow the Academic Lab program which is designed to assist students in developing executive functioning and study skills including time management, work completion, assessment preparation, and planning weekly schedules; work with individuals and small groups.

5. Monitor and implement effective interventions for a caseload of students who are not meeting academic expectations.

6. Support educators in implementing accommodations, differentiation practices, and scaffolding methods; assist in leading and participating in workshops, facilitating meetings, observing students in the classroom, and communicating regularly with educators individually and as part of a student support team.

7. Under the guidance of the Principal Learning Specialist, assist educators in classrooms to help adjust to the learning plans, enrich curricular approaches and improve pedagogy.

8. Participate in student support team meetings to review individual students' needs and progress; consult student learning profiles.

9. Support coordination of testing accommodations.

10. Help coordinate and supervise BruinCorp support for individual students.

11. In conjunction with the Principal Learning Specialist, assist the Registrar and Divisional Directors with the placement of students in class sections.

12. Under the direction of the Principal Learning Specialist, observe students displaying academic or behavioral difficulties to assess their learning strengths and challenges as requested by educators.

13. Use educator feedback for students (through Geffen Academy Portal Notes, Report Cards, and other communication) to inform their approach to support which include students' academic, individual, and developmental needs.

14. Compose and disseminate feedback regarding student progress and next steps to stakeholders: students, guardians, and Principal Learning Specialist.

15. Maintain and update permissions assigned to digitally-accessible sensitive student records.

16. Organize and update physical and digital filing systems housing confidential and sensitive student information.

17. Perform administrative duties for programming and documentation purposes as needed.

18. Uphold and enhance the Geffen Academy mission, vision, and values, and aid in the creation of an inclusive and supportive culture around learning and diversity.

19. Be up-to-date on current research and best practices, and innovative methods in learning, differentiation, and teaching, be well-versed with the language around learning needs, diverse learners, and public and independent school policies around diverse learners.

20. Encourage and cultivate a mindset of openness and support for diverse learners through the provision of educational materials, resources, and scholarly research/literature around inclusive learning environments that help educators, students, and families understand a myriad of learning differences.

21. Communicate clearly, persuasively, and professionally with all school constituents; regularly update students, parents, and educators with student needs, progress, and notes.

22. Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and other communications appropriate to ethical and professional standards.
